Lonely at Lindon 11-3-06
#1
[cool][#0000ff]TubeBabe is out of town so I launched solo at Lindon this morning, at about 7 AM. Got rained on as I got dressed and the clouds looked semiserious, with snow obviously falling on tops of the mountains. Good day for walleye, right? Not so.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]Water was kinda clean and 47 degrees in the harbor. Still a good 6 feet of depth all over the harbor and out the channel. All of the fish musta headed out because the harbor was a sonar desert. Only saw a single fish here and there and they were probably carp. At least no hits on all of the plastics and baits I served up.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]Finally got outside and started dragging a minnow for walleye, along with all the plastics I continued to throw. Caught a few small white bass and a misplaced perch, but no walleye. Finally the line started running out on my minnow rig and I hoped for a walleye. Nope, just a big ol' 26" channel cat that thought it was still July. Gotta admit the tug of war got me goin'.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]Gradually worked over to the bubbleup and tossed a bunch of different stuff there. Nothing but white bass, but some nice ones. I kept 4 over 12"...with the largest almost 15". They liked my chartreuse and purple 3" walleye plastic. Some of them liked the 4" chartreuse too.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]After an hour at the bubbleup I minnowed and plasticed back to the harbor. The water had warmed to 51 in the calm sunny conditions, but there were still no fish inside. I tried bottom bounching, casting and retrieving and vertical jigging next to the docks. Zero, goose-egg, nada, zilch. Shoulda gone home two hours earlier.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]It was a beautiful day, and I was the only one on the lake. No shore tanglers and no boats all day long. I did see a few flights of ducks go over but they wouldn't hit my jigs either.[/#0000ff]

I was hoping for better news from you today. The nice whites at the bubble-up are encouraging though. Lindon has been deserted the last four or five times that I was there too. What is the west side of the lake like this time of year?

[cool][#0000ff]The west side? Well, it's kinda to the west...and the water is wet and cold right now. Can't tell you much more than that because I can't ever remember fishing it this late in the year. [/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]I have fished it late September through mid October for walleyes in years past and have caught fish. But, for some reason, when the water really gets colder I have always fished Lincoln Beach because the water is deeper and there is more structure...and warm springs in most years.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]I'm guessing that if you were to work it aggressively, with all the right stuff, you could probably find some fish. The inside of the Saratoga Springs marina will probably hold some whities just before and during iceup...if that happens. And, if you can find water deeper than 5 or 6 feet out off the knolls and north, you will probably find walleyes and whites too.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]I doubt I will fit it into my intinerary this year, but I probably should check it out some afternoon.[/#0000ff]

[cool][#0000ff]Yeah, the whites were larger than some of the wipers from Willard...but they don't fight as hard.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]The cat was definitely bigger than the average Willard kitty.[/#0000ff]

Nice basket, and thanks for the report. It gives me soe hope that i will still be able to sneak in a float or two before the ice comes a knocken on the door. Just so you all know the Weather here in Radondo Beach is in the high 70's today and beautiful. I just wish i was at the beach instead of in this damn server room...

[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]Some really good tubin' in the bays over there. Also, some good eye candy on the beaches. A little bit of warm weather makes both better.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]Still some tubing on tap over here before hard water hits. You can bet I'll be kickin' around until the slush hardens around me.[/#0000ff]

Hey did I just get called a wind bag? I might even resemble that remark from time to time. I see you didn't kick over to the refuse station. But I bet you could walk it by now.

[cool][#0000ff]There's always the choice, when you leave the harbor: left or right. I like the area off the "garbage barn"...and the creek...but it is tough to be able to fish both that area and the bubbleup in one day from a tube. I just happened to decide to turn left.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]I have done well in the past on whities in the creek channel this time of year. As I drove out I noticed that there was a good flow of fairly clean water. Might be a plan for another shot.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]The thing about that area that has turned me off the past couple of years is the heavy underwater weed growth. It is amazing how thick that stuff has grown in with the high water of the past couple of years. Even the carp can't keep it down. [/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]Makes it impossible to drag a bait for kitties or cast and retrieve lures for other fish. And,it is still in there. At least I ran through clumps of it on the way over to the bubbleup so I'm guessing it is still to the north too.[/#0000ff]

[black][size 3]Hey 2fishon,[/size][/black]
[black][size 3][/size][/black]
[black][size 3]That west side can be some tough duty this time of year. Although, in the past, some walleyes could be had there if you found the right spot. This year though, I wonder if the walleyes don't have too much food available as I personally and some of my local Utah Lake guru friends have not seen fin nor scale of the 'eyes this year. As for the catfish over there this late in the year, it can be hit or miss - most of the kitties have migrated already. The white bass are just as sporadic as the catfish. [/size][/black]
[black][size 3][/size][/black]
[black][size 3]If you are really dedicated, and move around a lot, you probably could get into some fish. But, you could just as easily spend all day washing tackle there.[/size][/black]

Oh yeah the weeds are still there. But then so are some nice fish. But you are right its a true hassle and you have to work for everything you get. Donate some tackle and enjoy being frustrated helps also. I was thinking tue or maybe weds if I can sneak away from work. Monday is out as I have to move the equipment back to the jobs I stole them from this weekend.

Thanks for the info. I have fished Utah Lake for most of my life, I'm 37, but hardly ever on the west side. I have an older brother that fishes two or three days a week, and the walleye have been scarce. We had some incredible walleye fishing last year, but this year is a whole new ball game. I've pretty much given up on them this year. I just got a tube, so I now have access to areas that I didn't before. I'm one of those wackos that has never had an interest in having a boat. I fish with my brother on his bass boat, but that's about it. Maybe one of these years I'll change my mind. I really like the tube though, what a blast.

[cool][#0000ff]Hey, I'm with you. I have had the "enjoys" of boat ownership in the past and will still fish from someone else's boat (under duress), but I just plain prefer fishing from a tube. It is a SERIOUS fishing system, it is hands free and it is an up close and personal way to fish in "stealth mode".[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]Good exercise too. Sometimes too much, when the W comes up.[/#0000ff]
