i got an ice fishing tip up line in 20lb test. (75 yds) i imagine i'll use a flourocarbon leader for visibility reasons.
how should i rig a dead minnow to use on my new tip up? (live minnows are illegal here in utah) do i rig it with treble hooks? do i hang it horizontal, or vertical? should i use an attractor? any tips are appreciated as i am new to using tip ups. thanks guys!

I have looked through all my stuff, and am not finding it yet, but as soon as I do you will get it. I have been making them up, for we use Frozen Smelt (Thawed of coarse) That way you can slit to let some gut hang out.

that is just one more reason to use a octopus hook.
you can acheive the same hook ups or better.
personaly I just dont like the hook, I didnt have another setup pic with a different style hook.
a little pratice you can get them to sit up suspended like with an octopus. it dosnt hurt the minnow or shinners cause they are already dead.
to see if it is perpendicular just hold the rig up in the air by the line.

well, my first try at using my new tip up was a failure. i thought i had a great rig, but on that day (1/6/07) the fish wanted active jigging. i didnt get a single hit on the tip up because it had no motion, but i caught plenty on my jigging pole. i also think that the 20# leader i was using was too heavy/visible.
the second attempt 1/15/07 on strawberry was a different story. today the fish wanted active jigging for the most part, but also took some dead sticked baits as well. i added some bells to my flag so that i could hear, as well as see, when/if i got a hit. i was stoked the first time those bells started ringing! i managed to get a few on the tip up today and it was a lot of fun to have that added little bit of entertainment. aside from the fish being in a different mood, i think it helped that i scaled my leader down to 6# test line.
thanks to those who took the time to give me rig recommendations! i always appreciate it when bft'ers take the time to help each other out. i certainly have been on the recieving end of this help many times. thanks guys!

I have also used a tip ups at strawberry for the cutts, but i have been using circle hooks to limit the gutt hooked cutts because of the slot limit on strawberry, so far only two had the hook in their stomach out of 12 for two the time i have used used tip ups out there. the bell is a good idea if you use them at night get some glow stick. still hoping to get a monster rainbow. plan on trying them at deer creek or starvation for walleye or what ever else will hit. good luck
