[black]I thought I'd share a couple videos. They're not that great but there are a couple moments that are worth capturing. Most of them are like watching paint dry, moss growing or trolling but I hope you find some entertainment in them. If nothing else, the music is good.[/black]

Just installed high speed Internet on my PC, and this is the first video that I have looked at.

Looks like you had a good time, but really Sally, other than small girls (and my wife) I've never seen anyone take that long to land a fish. ha ha

Fun, ain't it?
PS: Just went back to see the senond video, and it wouldn't run. Maybe my problem.

[black]As he should or he deals with me! Handle with care! Let's not be too critical, Ken. That was these guys first trip to the Gorge and they caught more good macks on one weekend than a lot of guys on this board that have been doing it for a while. They did a pretty bang up job for their first trip up there.[/black]

I'll remember "scared and ginger" when you rip a hook out getting all excited!!![sly]
"Lift, reel, lift, reel. Easy. He's probably just barely hooked. Don't lift the rod up high. Now, pull on him. Smooooooooth."
Oh, that's right, you and that rod wrapper guy catch 'em two at a time. That's a fire drill! Where's Chuck in all this mac discussion?
PS. I'm on the BLM's new friend list, so I already got to see the video.[ ]

I don't even remember it now, but I don't care. I don't think I offended anyone too badly!
By the way, VERY NICE fish handling skills on that 28 pounder. Folks, that is how you net, remove a hook from, weigh, lift, and photograph a big old lake trout with minimal damage to yourself and the fish. And it swims away happily ever after.
You should make that a sticky post, "how to handle and release big lake trout." Just the landing and release parts at the end.

[black]If you've ever fished with Jim, you'll relate and get a kick out of this. I sent Jim a link to one of the videos and here's an excerpt from his reply:[/black]
I think if we had about 10 or 15 hook-sets, show about 20 seconds of bent rod, and another 10-20 seconds of the fish being landed; that would make a good clip. About 6 of those, and that would be a cool 5-6 minute video of a whole day! The trick, like you said, is to have the camera mounted in such a way, and the lens adjusted in such a way (wide), that you don't even worry about the camera.
I probably wouldn't make a habit out of it though. I've created enough of a monster with my "recent catches" posts. I need to tone those down a bit too, maybe just the fish over 30 or something. Maybe just 3 or 4 shots a week.
Now the Guns and Roses, well, that's just not me! I'd rather have the grunts, groans, and the guide yelling at the panic'd customers. "Go for two, go for two!!!" "DON"T LOOK AT HIM, He's not gonna catch one for you!" "OH!!! . . .YOU JUST GOT HIT!!!!!!!!!!" "If you'd have been paying attention instead of looking at that bent rod that's not yours . . ." "Jesus, might as well bring other lines in." "Reel 'em up fast, get 'em out of there."
"REEL!" "DON'T HORSE IT" "LIFT SMOOTH!" "You're reeling for nothing." "Pump with the rod, THEN reel." "Lift, reel, lift, reel."
I'd like to have video of all the "wiffs" at the end of the day too! Like someone falling on their ass! Or some smart-ass guide saying, "big fish don't do that."
Jim

Rich,
Now that is some good video and the video set to Ted Nugent was even better! Ahh the sound of Stanglehold reminds me of an archery deer hunt video I saw done to Stranglehold. It is a perfect hunting/fishing/pursuing song!! I especially liked when the song lyrics were "C'mon, c'mon up, c'mon, c'mon c'mon baby....". It was about that time he was lifting and reeling and bringing the fish up and looking down into the water for the fish. Awesome!!

Well on this dissusion of catching big fish, I've noticed at the gorge two things can happen after getting a large mack to the net. One the bladder fills and won't release trapping the fish at the surface. And the second problem that I've ran into is exahustion. I've caught many large macks and don't over fight them or do anything but maybe take a quick picture and release. Even when I do take a picture and release I always keep the fish in the water until everything is ready.
Although it rarely happens I've always ran them into shallow water before seeing them off so if they do sink they will have enough oxegen to revive eventually. Am I doing anything wrong and is there anything else to do?

[black]Hey HTG,[/black]

I can only answer your inquiry from my own experience with macks. I don't ever remember catching a mack that didn't expel air bubbles before breaking the surface. It has been my practice to land them as quickly as possible, and treat them as you would any fish that you intend to release.

Sometimes, it is necessary to hold them by the tail, moving them back and forth in the water to "revive" them. I don't think that a run to shallow water would be good for them.

When they regain their O2 and strength, they always dive straight down. If they aren't "power swimming" away from you at release, they are not ready.

I have gone through all the methods of fishing for them, long lining with steel and large flatfish, pulling baits with downriggers, and jigging. The fish seem to be in better shape when caught on a jig than any of the other methods.

I hope that this limited info. will answer your questions. Maybe others on here with more experience will have information.

In the summer when the surface water is in the high 60's and low 70's, those fish go into shock when pulled from 45 degree water into the hot stuff. Speed is the key then. Get 'em up, get 'em off, and get 'em back as fast as possible. I have some every year that, for some reason (?), don't release the air and are bloated. I gently squeeze their bellies from their butt forward, and usually can hear and feel the air come out their throats. Squeezing isn't good for any fish as it can damage internal organs, but they sure won't make it if they're stuck on the surface of that hot water for more than a few minutes. You do whatever is necessary for them to get back down to the cold water. In winter or early spring, I'll just let them swim on the surface (as long as they are swimming and not floating belly-up) until they get their equilibrium.
I've heard of guys attaching the fish to their downrigger with a peice of very light line or something, then lowering the fish down and releasing them that way. I've personally never tried it. Anoyne out there done that?
I'll be the first to admit that not all the fish I release make it. But I sure give every one a chance. Another thing about reviving a tired fish: The best way is to tow the fish in the water, NOT hold them and move them back and forth. The water needs to flow through the gills from front to back. Moving the fish back and forth does little, and takes more time. What I do is put my lip gripper on the fish's lower jaw when the fish is in the water, and move the boat forward with my electric until the fish tells me its ready to go. It usually only takes 10-30 seconds, and as the fish moves its tail to swim, I release the grip and off it goes, kicking all the way.
And while were on the subject of exhausted fish, Please don't try to be a hot-shot and use light line. Catching a large lake trout with 6 or 8 pound line IS NOT being a hot-shot sportsman. Its stupid, because it takes too long to land the fish, and lactic acid levels get toxic in the fish. Use heavy enough gear to land 'em as quick as you can. In my experience, there isn't a fish in that lake that can't be landed in 15 minutes or less with 12-15 pound line. (remember, a 40 pound lake trout only weighs a few pounds in the water) If it's taking longer than that, you're not putting enough pressure on them. Get 'em in, get 'em off, and get 'em back to the cold water.

I have done and seen that jim thay just track them down away's and go slow it has worked for me the one time I did it but dont know if it is a good way or not but it seem's to put a little life back in them.when the fish is still holding air i dont squeeze themjust hold them up and run your hand up the belly then all the air is realeased as long as you hold them straight up and down with head pont up that has been the best way I have found to burp these big fish know if I could only catch one to try this on . ash
