can i ask a question? it sounds like you had a great trip thats sweet.....but why do you need to gill the fish. hold em by the belly an tail. they arent going to be planted in there anytime soon touching their gills doesn't really help the situation.......just a thought

I was as gentle as I could be, it was either that or risk dropping the fish on the floor of the boat. What would be more tramatizing? Nate showed me what nets do to the fins of the muskies. It was the only way for me to keep a hold of them, they were released quickly with no damage.

[black]Toothy critters are not an area where I have a great amount of knowledge or experience, but from what I have seen on TV, most anglers only use "cradles" on large fish.[/black]

Like any fish, anytime you mess with a fish's gills, you pose a great threat to their survival.
But, there is a big difference between handling a fish's gills and gill plates.

Most small musky and pike that I see handled on TV, are grabbed across the back behind the head, and then held by the tail and supported by the belly.

This method is much kinder than using a net on fish. Unless you plan on catching a bunch of large musky, I would think that the cost of a cradle wouldn't be justified.

measure nets make one that is a woven mesh.....its big enough to land a 50" fish without pinching the fish in half and the holes in the net are so small a trouts fin wouldn't get hurt. It acts more like a blanket around fish than a net does.....
top it off there is a scale built into the handle......one quick pick measure an she is back in the water!

What a sweet trip! [cool] I am so stoked about catching two tigers on my first attempt too! Now it's time to get myself a HUGIE! These fish are totally addictive! But then again....so are bass! Glad you guys had a great time!
Majja Matt and I saw your truck/trailer at Jordanelle today (Sunday). How did you do?

At least you got some fishing in. We went up with my buddy for a shake down cruise on his boat. It has not been on the water for a couple of years and would not start. I am thinking bad gas most likely, but hey I do not have a boat so what do I know. We did get to watch some real good comic relief at the launch ramp though.

He said chub!
Hey that was a pretty good time but it think I'm all chubbed out for another couple of weeks.
Had to make myself feel better and catch LMB's at Utah Lake the next morning with some crappie kickers.
