Bryan (tarpon4me) fishes that area alot, Im sure he'll chime in here and put you in the right direction. When are you going to be there? We are having a BFT camp out the 14th and 15th of july at the state park. If your down there around that time you should drop by for sure.

I'm going to be in Murrells Inlet Area June 16-22..Looks like we will just miss each other. The cast nets that Ive used in the past have been cheaper and smaller 6 footers that Ive picked up @ places like Dicks Sports, Sports authority, Walmart etc. Im usally casting my net in the creeks.....Lots of stuff to get a net snagged on and ruin a net..So I just go the cheap route. I've had good luck with cheap ones. Where will you be casting? If you are going to be in the deeper water you might wanna you go for a higher quality cast net. I havent been to Murrells inlet in about 4 years..but when i was there last most off the nets I saw for sale where pretty cheap...Like the stuff @ walmart but marked up in price a good bit!
Anyway good luck on your trip
And welcome to the BFT SC forums!

Hey there imfisherman, and welcome to the message boards. Sorry about the late reply, I don't get on the boards on the weekend much, and i've had a full plate this week thus far at work.

As for your question................... When you say a "10' radius," I take it you mean just that. With that said, a 5' castnet has a 10' radius. Unless you're highly skilled, I wouldn't recommend a net over 6'. You can usually pick one up at any tackle store in garden city or murrells inlet for about 25 or 30 bucks. They are not expensive at all. By the time you get to the inlet, the mullet should be starting to poke their head out along the banks of the creek. You might also find some luck castneting on the bridges at garden city at low tide. There are lots of cool things that is catchable in those back creeks. Of course, you'll have to wait a few months before the shrimp are back in town.

The summer flounder are out and about, and can be caught drifting the back creeks with live mud minnows. Like I said above, the mullet should be here by the time you get here, and you'll be able to cast net your bait. Good thing too................The price of bait is going way up. [unsure]

Make sure and remind me when you are comming into town. Maybe I can meet up with you and have a cold brew. I'll show you a couple of my favorite resteraunts. [cool]

You know, if I remember correctly, I think they are thickest right around Sept and oct time frame. I know it's closer to fall when they really get thick. Maybe DR will jump in on this one since he lives down there. I don't take note of the shrimp run in my log, so I don't have up to date notes. I'm sure you can get smaller shrimp from time to time along the weeds year around, but they really aren't thick until later on.

Bryan ,you are rite about the time frame. We have had such bad weather this year there is no telling how this season will go for the Murrells Inlet/Myrtle Beach area fishing season. I can see a HUGE difference already! Last year this time we were catching nice fish with lots of bait in Murrells Inlet but the bait is just now starting to show up.
Everybody catch a bigun' Capt Shannon

That's right Shannon...............I looked at my log and I already had kings on the grill this time last year. Funny how that works eh? Now is when the mullet should be showing up, instead, the Menhaden are just moving out of Georgetown. [crazy] We need to petition Mother nature and get things right. LOL

In North Myrtle you may want to check out bass pro. I'v been there once but the one here in Charlotte , N.C. dose. You could stop by on your way south if that should be your the rout you take. Its located beside interstate 85 you can see it from the road. I would look there then Wall Mart and think about it on the way to the cost. You still have the time to stop in at the bass pro or Wall Mart when you get there. If the one in Charlotte don't have the one you need have them to call North Myrtle to help help you out.....
