Strong winds have again hampered fishing efforts on both the Great Lakes and inland lakes. The steelhead runs seem to be off to a slow start this year. Much needed rain will help push more fish into the river systems.
Southeast Lower Peninsula
Lake Erie - Perch fishing has been good, although recent strong winds may slow the action at least until the waters clear up.
Huron River - Steelhead started moving into the river but rain is needed to bring the water levels up which in turn will bring more fish in. The action has been slow except for a few fish caught when floating wax worms under a bobber. There are lots of shad at Huron Park, so the bluegill anglers have moved to the back channel where the river splits, which is located near the Telegraph Road Bridge.
Detroit River - Perch are still being caught around Sugar Island and Celeron Island. Walleye fishing continues to pick up and those jigging have caught fish.
Lexington - They are getting some steelhead off the pier when using crawlers. Northern pike and panfish have also been caught. The salmon are still there, but they are not hitting.
Port Austin - Anglers are catching small perch in Bird Creek.
Saginaw Bay - Perch were caught in the old shipping channel off the mouth of the Saginaw River, and around Buoy 22. Some were fishing in 7 feet of water out at the end of the navigation channel near Quanicassee.
Saginaw River - A few catfish have been caught in the lower river near Essexville.
Sebewaing River - Lots of small perch in the river and the marina.
Pigeon River - Small perch along with some rock bass and bluegills have been caught in the river and the marina at Caseville.
Southwest Lower Peninsula
St. Joseph - Fishing has been slow. A few anglers have managed to catch some whitefish off the pier.
St. Joseph River - Steelhead action has been slow with only a couple fish caught in recent days. It sounds like colder temperatures are needed to push the fish in because the water levels are good. Both boat and shore anglers are fishing between the mouth and Berrien Springs.
Kalamazoo River - Light numbers of steelhead have been caught up near the Allegan Dam. Anglers are floating spawn under a bobber.
Grand Haven - Pier anglers have caught light numbers of steelhead when using spawn. A few menominee were caught off the North Pier.
Grand River at Grand Rapids - Salmon action is just about done, with a few leftover fish being caught between the Sixth Street Dam and Fulton Street. Light numbers of steelhead and a couple brown trout have been caught. Walleye are hitting on crawlers, buck tail jigs or Hot-n-Tots fished off the bottom. Crappie are hitting on minnows on the river side of Riverside Park. Try a 3 to 4 foot leader with no weight under a lighted bobber. Big bluegills were caught on leaf worms.
Grand River at Lansing - Has good open water fishing. Catfish are hitting over at Moore's Park and boat anglers have caught crappie. Bluegills are still biting and a couple redhorse suckers were caught.
Looking Glass River - Those pike fishing near Babcock's Landing have caught some big bowfin, which are known to put up a good fight.
Reeds Lake - Has good pike fishing. Panfish action has been good when fishing in deeper waters.
Muskegon - When boats can get out, they are still catching Chinook in waters 140 to 180 feet deep. Most are trolling with spoons. Pier anglers have been trying for steelhead, but nothing yet. A couple menominee were taken on a single egg coated with brown sugar.
Northeast Lower Peninsula
Harrisville - Chinook salmon are still in the marina and the better fishing has been on those windy and rainy days when still-fishing with spawn or casting spoons, plugs or rapalas. The docks at the boat launches will be pulled sometime this week.
Van Ettan Lake - Perch fishing has been very good with some nice fish taken near the YMCA Camp when using a jig with minnows.
Oscoda - A few anglers were casting from the pier for walleye, brown trout, salmon and steelhead, but the only fish caught were a few walleye taken at night.
Au Sable River - Anglers are catching some salmon and steelhead when fishing the gravel beds in the lower river. Try drifting spawn under a bobber.
Tawas - There are quite a few perch inside the harbor, but anglers will have to do a lot of sorting as many of the fish are running small. The harbor is full of emerald shiners.
Au Gres River - Those fishing the East Branch are catching good numbers of steelhead in the surf and in the lower Whitney Drain. Spawn has worked best.
Northwest Lower Peninsula
Traverse City - Strong winds have limited boat access. In the East Bay, whitefish have been caught off the Center Road launch site when jigging Swedish Pimples. In the West Bay, perch anglers seem to be catching more gobies than perch.
Glen Lake - Perch are being caught, but anglers will need to sort out the small ones.
Manistee - Those trolling have caught Chinook and steelhead in waters 200 to 250 feet deep. Steelhead have been caught off both piers. Those still-fishing with a single egg have caught whitefish.
Manistee Lake - Boat anglers have caught Chinook, coho and steelhead when trolling plugs in 25 to 35 feet of water. For crappie, try a jig and minnow in 20 to 25 feet of water.
Manistee River - Salmon season is pretty much done. Steelhead are being caught but no big numbers yet. The river is running low and clear, so rain would certainly help get the steelhead moving.
Sable River - Anglers fishing up at the State Park are catching salmon as there are several fish below the Hamlin Dam.
Ludington - Boats trolling in 120 to 160 feet of water have caught salmon and steelhead. Pier anglers using spawn have caught some steelhead.
Pere Marquette Lake - Chinook and pike have been caught by those trolling.
Pere Marquette River - Anglers are still catching Chinook and some steelhead, but the salmon run is pretty much done. Any remaining fish would be quite dark by now.
Upper Peninsula
Portage Lake - Anglers have caught several legal and sub-legal smallmouth bass and northern pike. Walleye were caught when jigging minnows off the mouth of Coles Creek which is on Houghton Canal Road.
Marquette - Lake trout fishing has been good in waters 140 to 190 feet deep around the Sand Hole. The hot spot is now the breakwall in the lower harbor where anglers are fishing the middle for whitefish or still-fishing with spawn off the end near the lighthouse for lake trout. Splake and steelhead were also caught.
Dead River - Anglers have caught a couple Chinook and steelhead. Water levels on the river have been high.
Little Bay De Noc - Water temperatures are now 48 to 54 degrees. Many are fishing north of the Narrows where fair to good walleye fishing was reported when trolling crankbaits and crawlers in 13 to 20 feet of water. Good catches were taken off Kipling when fishing about 8 feet off the bottom in waters 30 to 40 feet deep and near the Black Bottom when jigging or drifting crawlers just off the bottom. Several nice perch were caught northeast of Butler Island when jigging minnows. Bass were caught on crankbaits just north of the Day's River.
Big Bay De Noc - Walleye were caught just south of Fayette off Burnt Bluff, which usually does not provide fall fishing for walleye. Boats trolling crankbaits in 30 feet of water along the break have marked good numbers of fish. Others are trolling in waters 20 to 30 feet deep between Round Island and St. Vitals Island.
Grand Marais - Those trolling in the bay are picking up the occasional coho and steelhead, but usually not more than two fish per boat. Anglers are now starting to catch whitefish off the pier.
De Tour - Boats have been marking salmon while trolling around the lighthouse. Walleye and pike anglers have traveled north up to Watsons Reef. Walleye are hitting on orange crawler harnesses and the pike are hitting on firetiger stickbaits. Yellow perch are hitting on emerald shiners in 15 feet of water around Peck Island.
Cedarville and Hessel - Perch anglers are fishing Musky Bay, Government Bay, around Little Joe Island and off the pier at Hessel. Minnows worked best in 8 to 15 feet of water. Smallmouth bass and northern pike are present however anglers are not targeting them. Salmon are still slowly migrating into Bush Creek and Beaver Tail Creek. Steelhead are also starting to bite.
Carp River - Angler pressure in the St. Ignace area has been centered on the river. Anglers are having limited success when fishing from the mouth up to the McDonald Rapids while using small spoons or spawn. Light numbers of steelhead have also been spotted near the mouth.
