Golden Pheasant Tails
#1
[cool][green]A number of flies call for the tail to be made from a Golden Pheasant. I think than it makes a neat looking tail. However, I just Googled Golden Pheasant and was surprised at it's appearance.[/green]

[green][cool]Here is an easy trout fly to tie using a golden pheasant feather for the tail. The trick is catching that bird. This fly is called the Queen of the Water.[/green]

[cool][green]Well actually the feathers used for the tail are from the tippet of the Golden Pheasant. At least that is what I use it for. See arrow.

okay...now you are confusing me again.. I thought a tippet was a piece of line you attach to the leader that is attached to the fly line that is attached to the backing that is attached to the reel that is attached to a fly rod... whewwwwwwwwww.. and now you tell me a pheasant has tippet that we use for tying flies.. and that fly is attached to the end of the tippet on the fly rod..

.. now do you see why I am Confused??? [Smile]

[green][cool]I have seen some tied using Golden Pheasant tippet & others using Moose hair. I think that the former looks better. But then again what do the fishys think?[Wink][/green]

i have never seen golden pheasant on a Royal Wulff but I am sure that some would make that variant. The standard is to use Moose body hair for the tail.

Royal Coachman uses golden pheasant for a tail.

There are lots of others but I can't remember any others at the moment.

[black]FYI[/black]

Not too many flies tied with golden pheasant anymore.

They are available however. They usually are sold in separate parts. The top of the head, the body skin, and the tail feathers. all together, the cost is about $60.00 to $70.00.

Attached is a pic of the original tie of the Queen of Waters. (no golden P feathers)

[#ff0000]UPDATE: I lied, the name of the fly shown below is the Queen of the water. My bad.[/#ff0000]

If ya dont mind the extra work, White goose fethers will work. you just need to change the color. Perminant magic marker yellow and black.

or find yellow rits perminant clothing die and die one yellow and then let it dry and tip the edge with black magic marker..

even a white turkey feather will work... just order your turkey on the hoof..[Tongue] you will have a life time supply of hackle...

I get most of my hackle free, I find walks in the park on the right day will turn up all kinds of feathers.. Crow, Goose, duck, just last month I found a wild turkey feather in my deer hunting spot. City parks are exclent places to find swan feathers wich will also work... You just have to be willing to do the extra work dieing and triming...[cool]

I bought a nice little cluster of these feathers. I got one cluster in the GOLD and one in RED.
This is all I use for tails on any of my "ROYALS". Royal Wulff, Royal Trude, and some wet flies.
I like a little color. I have even tied a Renagade with this tail and no brown hackle.
