St George on the fly
#1
I was wondering if anyone knows of some spots to fly fish around St George. I am trying to get out more, and keep the peace at home so I need include my wife on some of these trips. So this is my way of getting her involved, she can lie out around the pool and shop while I hit some rivers or lakes. Any insight would be great thanks

I am waiting for some answers on this one also. I know QUAIL LAKE AND ANOTHER TROUT LAKE AROUND THERE. My hubby might be going down there on occasion for work and I might tag along.

Thanks I will have to give that a shot. We go to St George a couple times a year, I have always left the fishing gear home. I just got a ODC 1220 pontoon because, it just cost to much to drag the 26 ft bayliner down there. So this will be great to try it out. Thanks for the info.

Several small streams are fishable. Santa Clara River near Veyo is the most popular. Has some browns. Leeds Creek, above the town of Leeds, has some cutts. Both streams are overgrown and so hiking and casting can be difficult, but they are fun. Both may have snow this time of year, but are probably fishing. Snow will go fast during the next few weeks.

Of course, Lees Ferry below Glen Canyon Dam is not that far away, and offers year-round classic fly fishing.

I agree completely with DBW's recommendations as for the best places to try this winter. My favorite place in the region is The Narrows on Beaver Dam Wash above Motoqua. It's very remote and the road is horrible but winter fishing has been great except this year. I'd skip it this winter as last year's drought really took out many trout. Nevada still appears to stock the stream upstream a bit despite the small reservoir being removed after the huge floods in Jan 2005. Hopefully that will lead to fish repopulating downstream in Utah if we get a better water year. I found the site www.utah.gov/fishing/so_ut_trout_streams.html very helpful when I started exploring these streams in the winter about 5 years ago.

I used to live down there and always went fly fishing on the golf courses. Every course down there has ponds and every pond is loaded with bass and small pan fish. It is really fun. As long as you stay out of the golfers way you should be fine. I used large attractor patterns on top and would drop a nymph or two below them. I caught fish on top and on the nymphs. Each time I go back I always try to get out to do a little golf course fly fishing. Give it a shot.

So what golf courses did you go to? Did you need to ask them if you could fish or did you just head on out there? It sounds like a lot of fun thanks

It's only worth it if your golf game is up to Parr. [Wink] I tend to get a little frustrated with chasing my ball in the rough.

Sunbrook(Green Valley), Southgate(South St. George), Greenspring(Washington), are good ones. Sunbrook has a hole with a large bridge over a large pond that was my favorite. Seriously, any course will have fish in their ponds though.

No pontoon boat, but don't forget the community ponds in St George.
This time of year, they are full of Trout and some nice Bass.
Strip a woolly bugger with sinkling line and have a ball.
You can also fish a small jig and a bobber with good results.
Tip the jig with wax worm or crappie nibbles power bait.
Spinners also work very well.
Adults are incouraged to release all fish there.
