I finally get some off and haven't been fishing in about 3 months so i am in some serious need to fish. I have the next week from wed on off until the next tues. Anyway here is my question. we are probably going to be down in the st George mesquite area and we are toying with the idea of heading to Powell for a couple of days at least. if not powell I am wondering if there are some other southern utah lakes that might be producing well (preuss might even be an option if the fishing is good right now). we would be in the page whawheep area if we go to powell and I was wondering if anyone knows of some good places i could fish from shore with any success? I would love to get into stripers if I could, but I have never fished for them without a boat. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. I have only fished powell once and it was a blast the last time i went. If anyone is heading down there and wouldn't mind an extra body in the boat I would gladly pitch in for gas etc if that is an option as well. Like I said any advice would be greatly appreciated and thanks in advance. I just have this crazy fishing itch I need to satisfy or I am going to go nuts,

just edited the post, basically if there are any southern utah lakes I should look at instead of powell that would be fine too.

Sand Hollow and Quail Creek (I believe thats the name) have some big LMB in them from what I have read/heard/seen!!! I believe they are right around the St. George area!!!

Quail, Gunlock, Sand Hollow, all good alternatives, close to St. George, water should be rising and warming, full of trout, panfish catfish and LMB. Powell is mostly cliffs around wahweap, but there is a big sandy beach by lone rock but the fishing may not be very good as it is not easy to access the deeper water from shore. You might get some carp, panfish or catchfish off the sand.
Im no expert on wahweap but other than that beach I cant think of any really good shore access near wahweap for fishing.
Good luck and have fun

oh yeah- if you want some ice action, Panguitch is north and east of Cedar City, should be plenty of ice up there and some nice cutts.

I am trying to find on the map where anchovy point is and trying to figure out how to get there or where exactly you are talking about. I think I know but if you have any more clarification that would help a lot. are all the places you mentioned best accessed from the trailhead that goes to the hanging gardens, and how far is the hike from parking to fishing If you know? like I said before thanks in advance,

[red][size 3]I think it is about a mile to Anchovy Point from the dam. It is the north west point where Wahweep bay meets the main channel. If you walk up the east side you will be on the opposite side of the main channel from the point. Most people were fishing closer to the dam with anchovies. There is a path that goes out along the water instead of the hanging garden. You have to hike at least beyond the buoys that keep the boats away from the dam itself. I didn't walk this trail but it didn't look to bad - unless you are trying to pack 50 pounds of stripers back to your car! [cool] I would watch the fishing reports in the main channel by the dam to see if it is heating up. Sent you a PM with a map.[/size][/red]

You can also find shore access on the Page side of the dam. The locals call it the "Chains". After you go southbound across the dam, you'll see an access road on the left hand side. It takes you down near the water, where lots of stripers are caught in the spring. It usually gets good around April.
There's a fishing pier at Wahweap Marina, where the private boats are kept. It comes complete with awning, benches, rod holders, and nightime lighting. Occasionally anglers do really well for stripers and catfish there at night. It can be good just about anytime, providing the stipers show up!
You can also get stripers on the "Gravel Bar" near the "Coves" in Wahweap Marina. Follow Lakeshore Drive past Stateline Launch Ramp and the rental houseboat area. On the right handside you'll see a sign for the "Coves" swimming Area. Note a large man-made gravel point extending out into the lake. I used to walk out and fish the westside of the gravel point with anchovies in the spring. I've caught several stripers there, and could be worth a try. It also gets better in April.
Hope it helps, Ryno
