Strawberry ice off?
#1
I've never really fished the berry 'till this last fall and caught more big trout consistantly than anywhere I've ever been in Utah, all cutthroat. The only time I planned a berry trip was about 10 years ago right as the ice was coming off (40-50' from shore) and caught some huge rainbows fishing with bait from the shore.
I would like to fish Strawberry as soon as you can launch a boat this spring for some rainbows (for the smoker) but don't know when to guesstimate ice off, I would think late April you could launch. How, what, where can I catch some 'bows? Shoot a pm if you like. I appreciate any help.

With the good winter that we have had this year and the unusual mild March weather that we have been having, who knows when the Berry will open up? I am in the same boat as you though, I would like to know too? But with the weather being as it is it looks like we will be waiting it out for a few more weeks unless we have a really big warm up and some "hurricanes" hit Utah!!!

I would predict the last week in April or no later than May 10th.

Usually ice off happens late April to early May. In my expierience, I have caught more rainbows on the Soldier creek side.

Kind of sucks, but Strawberry is a cutthroat lake. The few 'bows you catch could be huge, but it's hard to get any bait or lure past those gullible cutts. It is a great cutthroat fishery, but if you want big bows I would go to Scofield, Otter Creek, Piute, Kolob, Matt Warner, Calder, Crouse, Brough, or even Flaming Gorge. Strawberry needs to remain as it is, just don't plan on it ever being a great rainbow fishery.

We have had good weather the past few days, but the ice layer is VERY thick this year (read the posts of people burying their augers trying to drill through it). I would guess 1st of May at the earliest.

When it happens, it happens fast. You need to watch the reports closely and keep your days open so you can take off in a day's notice.

Some don't believe even with pictures and some like to hold the fish so close to the camera just to make them look bigger...

If you caught big fish you don't have to prove it to no one, but we all like to look at nice fish...[Wink][Image: fish-on.gif]
