Hello all. I have been lurking around this site for a little while now and decided i should join. Tons of helpful info on here and I would love to contribute.
After recently moving over to the eastern Idaho (lived in Boise my whole life) I decided ice fishing looked like it might be something I would enjoy doing. This past week I went out and bought the real basic stuff you need to do it. An auger, a couple short rods, and a few little jigs. Today I was finally able to go out and try to see what this whole ice fishing thing is all about. I absolutely loved it. My little brother and I started out around noon over at Roberts pond. I have read a little bit about it from this site and decided it would be a safe place to start. A few minutes after finishing my first hole (which was a lot harder than I ever expected) we started pulling out the little tiny perch. Besides all the perch, I caught one little planter rainbow. This continued for a couple hours but got a little old, so we decided to head over to Ririe to try to hook into something a little bigger. We got over to Ririe around 3:30 and headed down. We went out a little bit past the boat ramp and knocked in some holes that werent frozen over yet. After an hour and a half or so, my brother and I never got a single bite. I decide I would drill one more hole, only about 7 feet from the shore or so. I know that when I fly fish, I always stick by the shore line. Maybe it was just luck, but this decision paid off. The first time I dropped the line I managed to pull out a nice cutthroat. I decided I could drill another hole so I didn't have to share with my brother. First drop in, another cutthroat, this one a little nicer. They weren't huge by any means, but nonetheless a lot of fun. We hooked into a couple more but lost them. For my first time ever ice fishing, I had a lot of fun. I cant wait to get back out on the ice again. Here are a few pictures from the day.
