Channels off the channel
#1
KarlL and I hit up Cutler this morning planning on trolling for some eyes. After about a half hour of no bites we decided to change it up and try for some cats. Not wanting to have re-rig my pole, I jokingly tossed the baited hook off the side thinking, "Hey it's got a better chance of catching a fish in the water than in the boat." and rigged up my other pole and cast it in the other side.

A little while later, after watching a pig of a cat repeatedly jump out of the water about 50 yards to the north of us, we decided to pick up and move over there. As I was reeling in the pole i was actually fishing with Karl noticed my other line working it's way away from us. Sure enough a big ole channel was kind enough to hook itself. After a little fight underneath the boat we got it on the scales at 4lbs 10oz.

Needless to say we never got around to pulling the anchor. We fished till 2 and caught over 20 lbs of fish only keeping two of the bigger channels for dinner.

Here's the final count.

Channel cats: 2 @ 5lbs 9oz (we know they're not the same fish cause one was on a leader when the second was caught.) 1@ 4lbs 10oz, and 1 @ 2lbs 12oz.

1 carp @ about 6 lbs. we didn't bother weighing it because, well, it's a carp. 'nuff said.

and 1 fingerling bullhead (bait)

you really saw a catfish jump out of the water?
only asking because thats the first time i have ever heard of them jumping, i have seen them roll the surface before but never become airborn. would have been neat to see.

Sound like we should've gone to Cutler today. LordCrappie and I took my boat out to Benson Marina today. We ended up with about two dozen mud cats but no channels. Now we know where to go next time. By the way, if you don't mind, what were you using?

We actually launched at benson marina. All we were using was earthworms and beef liver on crappie rigs. Cast em out and wait for the big ones to try pulling your pole out of the boat.

it wasn't a full breach like trout will do but they were coming about half way out.

I noticed the other day that the bullhead were rolling on the surface, and even appeared to be taking some rather large midges off the top. Weird.

just a hint for ya next time your out on the lake!! ;] take that carp and cut it up in three inch squares then put it on your hook. the more blood you can get on it the better it will attract a biggun .

How easily can you get to Cutler from Benson? A couple of years ago a buddy of mine and me tried to drive it and just ended up stuck on sand bars.

well we have a raft with a minn kota on it so we ride on top of the water rather than in it. there were time where we were only in a foot of water.

COLD. I don't have a finder so I don't know for sure. But I got soaked coming back in against the wind and waves and it was anything but pleasant.

The funny thing about that second 5+ lb fish was the hook was in it's mouth, but not really hooked to anything. It had just rolled around a bunch so that it was tangled up in the line.

were you fishing in the channel or were you baits off it on a flat. I am thinking about heading out there tomorrow and was wondering what depths i should target them in.

We were in the flats. The first one we caught was in about 1' of water, the rest weren't in any more than 3' fairly close to a bunch of reed islands.

Cool JJ!! I've witnessed kitty's jumpin out of the water in the shallows! Last Summer I saw a HUGE one come up and devour a lil mud duck! It was one of those wished I had a camera moments. I just stood there thinking "did I just see what I thought I saw"!
Smiles Always!
