Meadow Creek Pond In Roy, UT
#1
[mad]
[font "Arial"][#000000][size 2]Meadow Creek Pond in Roy, UT is a beautiful park, but Sadly, it seems to be fished-out. I spent all of Saturday evening and much of this morning bobbing in this pond with chicken livers. But, neither me, nor anyone else (30 0r so fishermen) even got a single bite. In fact, the only thing catching fish were the multitudes of ducks and geese. So, I guess there are some fish in there...but it's extremely slim pickings. I didn't even see a few small panfish on the shoreline, which is usually a healthy fishing sign. I think the panfish have been rendered extict, or near extinction, thanks to the ducks, pollution...and who knows what else. Roy City Parks & Recreation really needs to do something about restocking this pond, or else, the fishermen will soon be extinct too.

That's a lot of people fishing a small pond. DWR stocking reports shows that it has been stocked weekly with bows for many weeks. Assuming they keep stocking it on Mondays I'd try again earlier in the week.

Meadow Creek Pond has become one of the new feeding grounds for Corrmorants.
These fish eating birds are showing up in numbers of over 40 a day.
Corromrants can and do eat up to 6 fish each, every day.
They are Federally protected so it's a very difficult task to try to keep them out of the pond.

The fish in the pond are running scared from the birds and don't ever get a chance to settle down and cruse the pond like normal.

Corrmorants are migratory birds and normally leave our area by the middle to end of June.

The DWR and Roy City have been trying to do some things to get the birds to leave, but they are very persistent.

Fall trout fishing has been much better than Spring fishing at the pond and I suspect it will stay that way as long as the birds keep showing up in the Spring.

These birds are also showing up at several other Community Ponds, like Jensen and Farmington Ponds.

I don't know if there will ever be a legal way to rid the ponds of these birds.

Like the saying goes,
"Build it and they will come."

Thanks for the info guys...this is really helpful. Just a couple of follow-on questions: 1) Why do they only stock the pond with trout...the panfish and other fish seem to be more dessimated than the trout numbers? 2) What bait works well for trout, using a spinner reel?

Thanks again!

For those trout, power bait seems to work prety well. I like the preformed "eggs".

They stop stocking trout and switch to channel cats when the water warms.
Ut is just getting it's "warm water" hatchery program going. Soon there will be stocking of more than the Wipers and Catfish we get now.

When the Pond was first built about 5 years ago, it was stocked with LMB and Bluegill. Perch were added the next year and 500 more LMB were stocked 2 more times in the following years.
These small ponds can't keep the fish in them long enough for any good reproduction to occure.
Between the Corrmorants and the people that come and take a limit or more almost every day, the pond is depleted of fish within a few days of stocking.

Community Ponds are put and take fisheries and little can be done to change that.

On a side note, tonight is the RAC meeting for the Northern Region and there will be a discussion about changing the limits on Community Ponds to reduce it to only 2 fish of any species with a combined total of 4 fish.
This means that only 2 of your fish may be trout or catfish.
This could help to keep some fish in the ponds longer.
At least as long as people obey the law.
I hope this change passes.

Thanks so much fishing friends. I'm really beginning to get a good picture of the community fishing issues at hand. And, I really appreciate the fishing tips. I haven't really fished in almost twenty years, but my kids are budding and they want to learn what this fishing thing is all about.

I was pretty embarrassed after taking them to the Meadow Brook pond...and we didn't even get a bite. But, now, I'm armed and dangerous with the new knowledge I have received. Hopefully, my kids will get that innocent thrill of catching their first "big one" very soon.

This is really wonderful info. Thank you so very much!
