[cool][#0000ff]Had an invite to join ripnlip on his pontoon today. No, not the float tube kinda pontoon. His is a big 24 foot pontoon BOAT. Yeah, right. Me on a boat.
Launched that big bad floating platform at Lindon just before 7 AM. Still kinda darkish. Headed for ripnlip's favorite early spot. Pulled up into the shoreline reeds and got into a whitie fest. Every cast with any kind of lure brought in a feisty white bass. Nothing over 11 inches, but provided a supply of bait and a few for the scampi pan.
No kitties at the first spot we tried. Moved a bit and started getting some "pop and drops". Danged white bass messin wit da bait. WRONGO. Set the hook on a couple of those pesky whities and they pulled back hard. Kitties. Again, nothing big, but nice eaters in the 16" to 20" range.
Tried two or three more stops at Walts favorite cat hangouts. Most were in water shallower than 3 feet. Got only a few more small cats. Have had reports of larger fish in deeper water but even when we tried drifting in deeper water we did no better.
Beautiful day on the water. Had one water skier and a couple of PWCs that could not stand seeing us enjoying ourselves in solitude so they came closer than necessary. And their loud whoops definitely called our attention to them so we could see that they were having a great time.
Only light breezes at any time during the day, with flat calm most of the time. Great to meet Walt and to be a guest on his great boat. Sure glad he had a big motor and an electric bow mount trolling motor. I would hate to have to move that big thing around with my fins.
We both had other things calling us back home so we did not make a long day of it. Got the pontoon trailered and both headed home just after noon.
For those thinking about doin' some cattin' on Utah Lake, it seems that the weather has laid down a bit and at least some cats are moving back in closer to shore for awhile. Water was fairly clean with temps in the mid sixties. That is plenty comfy for kitties. Should be good until the fall weather front comes in as forecast next week. After that the temps will probably drop a bit more and the fish will be deeper. The upside will be that the walleyes should start to get more active.
