Da Knolls
#1
[cool][#0000ff]It must be spring. I have been getting a lot of requests for info on "Da Knolls". Sheesh. Catch a couple of catfish and post a couple of reports and all of a sudden everybody wants complete intel.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]I HAVE accumulated a fair amount of time at that poor mistreated area of Utah Lake. I always have to grit my teeth and shake my head when I see what the trashers leave behind. But, for that reason I do not hesitate to post info on BFT that might help a few more RESPONSIBLE anglers find their way there. It ain't like hotspottin'.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]The only thing I ask of anybody who uses what I have provided is to always carry some garbage bags when you go there...and help clean up after the slobs who ruin it for the rest of us.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]Fishing has not taken off there yet this year. But, any day now there will be walleyes along the shoreline and kitties in deeper water. Then the white bass will come in by the bajillions along some of the shallow rocky areas. It is a great place to take kids where they can wade out into a foot or two of water and catch two whities at a time until their arms get tired...or you get tired of taking fish off for them.[/#0000ff]

[#0000ff]Come on sunshine and warm weather.[/#0000ff]

Now ya "HOTSPOTTED" it, cuz I wanna go there right now! LOL, just kidding...
I went there one yr, oh...about 9 yrs ago or so, and they were having like the WORST case of some type of spider out on the west side of UL and down that way. If you looked out across the sagebrush as the sun went down all you could see was spider webs by the GO-ZILLION... as far as the eye could see...THAT otta "slow the flow"!

It was a nice place to take your kids, and ride ATV's, fish, camp, the whole nine yards....then I heard it all got shut down from partying and trashing, so I haven't been back since. Is that not true? Can one still get in there and do the aforementioned antics??

Great article - as usual. Glad that I could lend my boat and vehicle as a prop.[Wink]

The police are there a lot more, but when they leave it doesn't take too long for it to become a whole different planet with no rules....you are on your own out there and at night it gets roudy.

[Wink]Yes, tube dude, I am guilty of asking for too much info on that area. I have been there many times on shore at night. It can be very gnarly. I have ran into people stripping cars and running off into the bushes. I think I might have scared them more than me. Then, on Saturdays and Sundays it sounds like people are on army patrol or exercises with all the guns and stuff going off up on the west bench (behind the actual knolls). I like that area during the day to take the kids in my boat, drop anchor and fish. I esp. have tried to fish the gravel bars in front of the silo for walleye to no avail. May be, some day, perhaps I will get one on line. For now, thanks for the info.

The knolls are a great place to fish. I went there last year with Madfisher55 and spent a little time fishing before we got blown off the water. Here are some pics. It is too bad that the partiers think they can destroy anything and everything wherever they go. Hopefully it will get cleaned up.

Oh one thing more, I don't know if it is still there or not but somene had a set line out there in rather shallow water with some monster hooks on it that could cause a little trouble if you got into it. Hopefully it is gone now.

[cool][#0000ff]The spiders are still there every summer. They were there first. They are "salt air" spiders. Big black nasty lookin' things that some folks mistake for black widows. They are not aggressive or poisonous but if you get one on you by walking through its web it might bite. Shortly after the Saratoga Springs started growing big time the local residents freaked out when there was a big invasion of those spiders all around their homes. It made the news all over the country and there are still a lot of websites that have that story.[/#0000ff]

[#0000ff]Plenty of partying, ATVing, shooting and "other" frivolity going on out there still.[/#0000ff]

[cool][#0000ff]Yeah, I know. Now you want royalties. Well, you can have 10% of all the big bucks I get from posting this free on the board.[/#0000ff]

[#0000ff]Glad you and your wife could join me that day. I think she had a good time. At least she doesn't look very unhappy in this picture.[/#0000ff]

[quote fsh4fun05] What's the water temp looking like?[/quote]

[cool][#0000ff]As might be expected, the temps are up and down with the continuous fronts moving through. At least they are mostly above 40 degrees...up to 50 on a couple of afternoons.[/#0000ff]

[quote Nica]I saw a while ago that you are working on a book on Utah Lake TD, s this an excerpt from it?[/quote]

[cool][#0000ff]Yep. In addition to chapters on the history and ecology of Utah Lake, I am also doing sections on the prominent fish species and most of the access points and fishing spots.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]I have several chapters completed and others roughed out. It will take a while for me to complete but it is a fun trip down memory lane as I go back through my photo archives assembling the pics to include.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]Here is another freebie...on the history of the lake. Some interesting facts for those who have not seen the charts and tables before. And, the pics of those huge cutthroat and largemouths from days of old are really something.[/#0000ff]

I gave some thought to hitting the knolls last Sunday but when I hit the area south of Pelican Pt., & heard what sounded like a firefight coming from that area scrapped the idea. I've been at the knolls before when the idiots up on the hill were at it. Having rounds splashing into the lake around you sure motivates gettin' outta Dodge.

Hey albinotrout, did you by chance just sell that truck in the second pic? If you did I know the guy that bought it.

I have only fished it a couple of times, both early morning in July or so. I agree the gunfire was a little disturbing, and the place is full of litter. But I like its relative solitude and ample fish.

From Orem, I might as well go to Strawberry as go to Da Knolls timewise. It's getting a mighty-crowded through Lehi - Saratoga Sprgs. And no I don't want a bridge to make it faster. All those folks heading east would get dumped into my general neighborhood (800 North), and there's already too much traffic around my neighborhood. But that's my problem, not yours...

Tight lines and happy Friday, my good friends!

I sure do appreciate your research, pictures, technical information, and entertaining writing. Thanks for sharing this information on the Knolls.
I have been studying your document on walleye fishing at Utah Lake; that is, I have been reading and re-reading the document. Great information, presented in a very interesting manner!!
