Flies for the berry ??

Im heading to the berry sunday and was wondering what flies work the best ?? I hear that white cone head woolly buggers & cinnamon buggers work well.. What would you use ?? I also watched a fishing show where they dropped a nymph behind the bugger.. What type of nymph would you use ??

I like the Gartside Softhackles in Purple and Black and also the Platt River Spider (Yellow Brown with a red undertail)
Nymphs, Haresears, Prince Nymph and Wet Royal Coachman in about a #12.

Purple Showgirls too.

I was just wondering how you fish the nymphs at the Berry? Using a strike indicator link in a river, or as a dropper to the bigger streamer like lifes and strip slow. Just wondering, still kind of new to still water F. fishing.

I've seen the flygodess in person and her skills are legendary. She fishes both under an indicator and stripping it in And stripping it in under an indicator.

I have watched her, copied her but never done as well.

Indicator fishing on still water is not exactly like rivers but you get the jist of it.

Joni, maybe you should put on a seminar. I know I'd pay to see that. An hour or two of tying and then an hour or two of How-To fish streamers and nymphs/chironomids.

This time of year I'll usually start with a black or olive seal bugger on an intermediate sink line. And just change up retrieves, flies, techniques, and lines as the situations dictate. The Berry can be a crazy place. Fishing can be lights out and turn off at the drop of the hat. It can be stone cold dead, and turn on just as quickly. One day epic, the next day a skunk.

There's a lot of trial and error, even for the Strawberry guru's. But yes, I'd like to learn at the feet of the famed flygoddess as well!

Fished the berry friday/saturday. I managed to catch a couple, but it was VERY slow! Both fish came on a black/red wooly bugger on a fast retrieve. My general "go to" flys there are dark in color. Best of luck on Sunday! Maybe the weather will be good for you.


Added info- in addition to both of my fish coming on the same fly, both fish were caught about 20-30 feet from shore. Most of the people who I talked to said their best luck was in shallow, but I also saw a few hooked up out a bit further.

WOW, guys, I have the same problems you all do. What, where, when and how.
AFK, I just spent an over nighter on an Idaho lake and to say slow was exaggerating.
I landed some, lost some, and lost a very expensive reel and line plus the new gas motor tipped over and broke, so never got a chance to try it.

Anyway, On strawberry I will use a TYPE II and Depth Charge 250. I do the V connection, meaning I take about 6 feet of 6lb fluoro, fold it in NOT equal half. One side is at least 1 foot shorter. I then put a loop in the bend and attach straight to the loop in the SINKING line. I tie the smaller fly (nymph) to the shorter side and a bigger fly to the longer.. It give an appearance of being chased that way.

With the indicator, you need sonar. I use straight Flouro as a leader when deep nymphing (as casting isn't an issue)
That is when I use the slip Indicators.
As mention, fish at 20 feet deep. Set indicator at 18 or 19 feet and use a nymph or a chironomid.
Let them sit...twitch occasionally.
Match can testify that you are not sitting long.

First I ever heard of the v-stetup...the loop in the middle, is that just and overhand knot as you hold the middle loop together?


Yes the wait and see is very effective under and indicator...I tie up to 3 flies 10-12" apart and set my depth to the bottom fly from the indicator....I probably wait more then FG, but it really does work and its great not have to strip in flies all the time...My wife also likes the indicator, her favorite new way of fishing...
