HI guy,
I just started fishing. In fact tonight was my first time fishing. I went fishing with a buddy of mine over at the Stevens Creek Reservoir didn't catch a thing. We were only out there for 30min so that's to be expected I'm sure.
So, the kind of gear I have is second hand. I picked it up at an estate sale for 20bucks, got myself a Master Spectra 6'6'' composite graphite rod, and a Quantum xr-3 reel. I'm hoping I can use this as a general purpose rod since my friends go pier and lake fishing. Only problem is that I don't have a spare Quantum xr-3 spool.
I kind of messed up because when I went to get the line they gave me a 12lbs line for pier fishing. I don't really know too much but if I could get some help on what to get as an extra rod and reel for lake or pier fishing. That'd be awesome.

Welcome to the site Yenwen, here is a link to our Ca boards: http://www.bigfishtackle.com/forum/gforum.cgi?category=11
You said you have, 12lbs line for pier fishing, if you want to use lighter line for other types of fishing, just put a 3 to 4 foot section of lighter line onto the main line and connect with a swivel or you could go to your local sporting goods store and buy or order a second spool for your reel. Good luck in your fishing.

You know the problem is that the reel I have was made in 1994. I think that they don't make spools for it. I can't even find it on the website. How does the thinner line work?

Hey guys just wondering if there was a blog or post about fishing basics. I was hoping to learn some stuff about hooks, bait, reels, rods, well the whole nine. hahaha

I guess you could check on Ebay or just buy another reel at a yard sale. As far as using thinning line goes, it depends, if you are fishing for smaller fish than you would normally fish for at the pier then the line would be harder for the fish to see and so hopefully the fish will be easier to catch.
If your interested in getting more info on what to use while fishing try asking any questions you might have on one of our freshwater fishing boards, here is a link to that section: http://www.bigfishtackle.com/forum/gforum.cgi?category=70
Good luck

Yea that's what I ended up doing, I picked up a tackle box, Daiwa rod, and a abu garcia pt300r reel. Really happy with the reel it's amazing.
I'm trying to figure out if I need to get a rod and reel for pier/beach fishing since my friends do that often as well. I don't know what I need how much I'd be able to get it for at a garage/yard sale or Craigslist. Any advice on that?

If you can find a rod and reel for pier/beach fishing at a yard sale, you should buy it, if you can afford it, because they will cost a lot more elsewhere. I don't fish piers or the beach, so I can't be of much help to you there but you can always ask your question on our saltwater fishing boards. We have a section there for Pier/Bank fishing and Surf Fishing.
Good luck

Hey Wiperhunter 2,
Where do you like to chase wipers? I've never been fishing for them but I hear they're a blast to catch. I love tiger muskies.
