carp?

just wondering what kind of dry flies work well on carp, I know it sounds weird, but I've caught a few carp and had a lot of fun bringing them in on spinning rods. thought it would be way fun on a fly rod.

what kind of fly, what test of line. and also, is a 6 WT rod big enough for carp, or could it snap? I'm just starting out fly fishing so I don't know much about fly fishing in general. any help would be very appreciated.

As far as dry fly...it is going to be a hit miss. Try an Adams, Mosquito maybe even a Wulff.
I catch them more with nymphs, but if they are rising, go for it. It is possible for sure.
A six weight is also okay. You might want an 8 wt in the future but more for big flies and the weeds they live in, but I have use a 6 on many occasions.
The test of line, I am going to say also depends on the action of the rod. Is the tip forgiving.
But, I use at least 8 lb when I fish for Carp or 0X. I have use 3X, but it depends of the vegetation.

sounds like you fish for carp a lot. where I go, the water is less than a foot deep, so you can see the fins of the fish poking out of the water. there are a lot of them there too. I've been there a couple times fishing with worms, but I hardly catch any because they can't even see it in the muddy water, so I figured fly fishing for them would be better.
I've never thought that carp would take a nymph, they seem like such a lazy fish that they wouldn't chase anything. I guess I was wrong. a woolybugger or something?

Woolly Buggers are great. I use more like Haresears. Floating line and long leaders. Presentation is very important though. As you say, they can be lazy so you often have to bring it right in front of them.
The river I fish is the same situation...shallow and grassy. When they play it gets very cloudy as well, but they seem to find the Haresears.

Woollys? Black is always good, but Olive and Brown plus my favorite color...YELLOW.

If want to use a dry you could try a fly that looks like a cottonwood tree puff. I think cabelas sell them or you could try tying one yourself. keep in mind though that I have never fly fished for carp. I have just read a couple of articles on it.

Not taking anything away from Rainy, but I have both those flies and ZIP on the carp. They didn't even look twice at either.

Are my got to. You want an easy to tie dry that works great, I came up with this one.



But like I said, a good old Haresear and rubber legs even better, they just work.

Super easy. Just cut a strip of white foam and keep looping it and tying it down.

I don't fish for carp much but I had good success using the bread crumb fly tied with antron.

Strange enough I was fishing gills with a pheasant tail & BH Hares ear and had a carp take one of the flies not sure which one cause it snapped my leader but I was able pull the head and see it was a carp.
