ice fishing question...

im new to the whole ice fishing sceen, now i need a ice fishing pole which im gunna buy, but my question is can my reel from my long poles fit on an ice fishing pole? or do i need a new reel an rod? thanks for any help

I use my reels from the long poles on the ice poles for the most part but I have a few super light ice poles that need very small reels. To get started you can use what you have, in fact you can use your long pole on the ice if you want to.

you can use you reel from your long pole.. ya might want to go to 4 or 6 lb line tho if ya have heavy'er line then that on them..

Yes you can. I use my full sized reels on two of my five ice rods. works fine unless you have HUGE reels. I have a Stradic Ci4 2500.

I agree with all the comments, yes you can use a long pole reel on an ice fishing pole and yes I do know people who ice fish with their long poles. There are many places you can buy a cheaper ice rod combo with the reel already on it. The great thing about fishing is that the fish don't know how much you spent on a pole. Use whatever you can to get started and build up your arsenal over time. Good Luck with the ice fishing!

I never use a short pole unless I am in an ice house. My first trip to strawberry was with a friend and some other fishermen that I did not know. I am from Idaho and I have been ice fishing for 20 years or so. For whatever reason they thought it was funny that I used a long pole. It was not long before they quit laughing since I caught a lot of fish that day.

The bottom line for me is that a long pole helps you set the hook, take up slack and control the fish better, so unless you are also purchasing an ice house or you are going with someone who has one, just use the long pole.

I may be a little extreme on this point and I am sure there are other opinions out there (and far better fishermen), but I am such an adherent to the principle that I make my own ice rods for the inside of the ice house to make sure they are as long as I can comfortably use in the ice house.

I think you are better off with your standard reel on an ice pole. The reels that often come with the less expensive ice combos are not very good. I have literally had one fall apart in my hands as I reeled a fish in.

Unless you're fishing for very small panfish I would use at least 6-8 pound line in fluoro. Ice fishing puts much more strain on your line than open water due to short rods, cold weather, and your line going through an ice-hole.
