Joes Valley 4-22-11
#1
We fished Joe's Valley today from 10AM until 6PM. We caught 30 trout and 1 crawdad between the 3 of us. We caught Splake, Tiger Trout, Rainbows, and Cutthroats. We were catching most of the fish on minnows and we ended up going through 2 packs of minnows then we ran out. I had a floating minnow and a pack of stupid seagulls kept dive bombing it and carrying the minnow up in the air. So I had to put a couple of split shots on the line to make it sink. The biggest fish was about 17" and the average was about 13".

Good job. I'm glad it's picking up out there. Did you throw that crawdad on a hook?

They're great at that size.

No we put back all of the fish and put the crawdad back in the water so the fish had something to eat.

Great fishing trip to a spot that can be difficult to catch many fish. Just wanted to know how you rigged those minnows and what species you used and what size were they.

We got one package from fish tech and one from sportsman's warehouse. One package was around 3 and a half " and the other about 4". Both were different brands and I didn't see any advantages over the other. We used a small treble hook through the back of the head of the minnow and then a half hitch knot around the tail of the minnow. So basically you just stick the hook into the back of the minnow and then wrap the line around the tail. This way when you cast most of the force is around the tail of the minnow and you don't have to worry about the hook falling out. Hope that makes sense next time I will take pictures.

we hit it saturday and sunday and caught a few big splake and a whole bunch of 23-28 inch tiger muskies. I'd say you have one more year before the muskies destroy the trout fishery there......kinda Sad, but the muskies fight harder than a big splake so maybe it will be fun in a couple years....
