I like to use a really good circle hook, 1/0 or 2/0, fresh shrimp and a bit of white bass, no weight if possible. If you must use weight, use a sliding sinker, tie on a swivel, then one to three feet of leader, then the hook. The last time I tried it was the day my youngest grandson was born last summer. The result was an eight-pounder that was just half a pound smaller than my new grandson. Here's a picture of the critter with my oldest grandson, Parker. Throw on a medium size hook with a full night crawler, put a split shot approx. 12 inches above the hook. Never fails! Just secure your pole in case a carp grabs a hold and pulls it in (it happened to me last year at the Lindon boat harbor, but I won, I jumped in and caught my pole, and still caught the fish).

I agree with what lundfun said. I use a swivel with a sinker above it. The line is free to move even if the sinker is not. I have found that the cats will let go if they feel tension before they actually "take" the bait. I either leave my bail open or release my drag all the way, so that when the cats take is, there is little to no resistance. I generally fish with a nightcrawler or carp meat. Or in Alabama, I just use my fingers, but you can't do that here. []

I give up trying to attach a photo of the eight-pounder I caught last year. Thus, I posted it on one of my websites, so here's the URL:

Great pic!
Count me in to subscribing to the theory of using 'no tension' on the line by using a slider sinker and by turning the drag all the down. When the Cat takes it, just pick up the pole, tighten the drag, and set the hook. My brother will use a bobber and about 3' of liter. Seems to work well for him @ Utah Lake. [signature]

I use the same rig as lundfun with a minor exception. I never could get the hang of circle hooks, and I like the thrill of setting the hook, so I use a regular old 2/0 baitholder. The benefit of using white bass or carp meat is that you won't have carp messing with you like they would with a nightcrawler. Just personal preference. I'll admit I've resorted to nightcrawlers a time or two when nothing was biting and I was desperate for any fish.... even a carp.

No blue catfish in Utah Lake. You get channel cats and bullhead cats. You can read TD's writeup on Utah Lake cats and he has pictures of the range of colors that channel cats show up in. We had all three in Texas and sometimes the only way I could tell a channel from a blue was to count the anal fin's rays.

Don't be afraid to fish bigger baits too.
I've caught some big cats on halved white bass down there. [signature]

really cause we use hole chubs and on the bass should i scale it before i throw it out and dose any one know if there would be a state record in there i was out every week last year and the biggest was 15lbs the state record is 32lbs 5 or 8 oz

[cool][#0000ff]One of the 27 inch cats we caught last week had a whole 11" white bass in it. And I have seen 1# carp in a 12# cat. I also once saw a small whole chicken inside a cat that might have weighed about 10#. Stinko. They can eat big when they find big...and if they are hungry.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff] [#0000ff]It is always possible that there is a state record cat swimming in Utah Lake. But it is a long shot that anybody will hook it and/or land it. The big ones get big by eating big...and by avoiding the wimpy stuff that most fishermen use.[/#0000ff] [#0000ff][/#0000ff] [#0000ff]And, there is not a week goes by on this board without somebody crying about a big fish that broke their line. As long as Utah anglers keep buying cheap line, tying bad knots and using lousy reels with poor drags they will not land the truly big fish they hook. Fish don't break lines...fishermen do.[/#0000ff] [signature]

Amen to that- "Fish don't break lines, Fishermen do." And big fish, while being picky about presentation, are truly 'opportunists' when it comes to bigger bait.
I'm still trying to teach my brother that one. [signature]
