Gunnison reservoir info wanted
#1
My son recently moved to Manti and said that Gunnison Reservoir is near there just up the road from Nine-mile. He doesn't know anything about it and I was wondering if any of the BFT gang in the area can tell me what is in there, and if it is worth trying it in a small boat this summer, or if Nine Mile is a better bet. Thanks, Acey

[cool][#0000ff]Well, well, well. Look who's still alive and fishin'. [/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]Good to see ya on the board again.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]Gunnison used to be a good fishin' hole. Big bass and perch...and huge catfish. Now it is mostly a carp pond that the water users drain down to nothing every year. Still a few cats but nothing else besides grundles of carp.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]9-mile can be tough but there are also some big fish (trout) to be had. Gotta be good and gotta be lucky...good and lucky.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]You can also consider PaliSades. Closer to Manti and they keep it well stocked. But it has also had its ups and downs...both waterwise and fishng wise. It is a state park so you can call or email for a current report.[/#0000ff]

[#0000ff]Good luck.[/#0000ff]

Hi Tubedude - Yes I am still hanging around in northern Utah. I didn't do much fishing during the winter or spring. I did get a trip to Locomotive Springs in March with the Scouts and had a good time there with a spinner. Now that summer is here and work isn't quite as hectic I am trying to get back into the relaxation mode that fishing gives me. I had some work done on the boat motor so I can hit the water with it again. I have been taking grandkids to some of the local ponds and teaching them how to fish.
Thanks for the Gunnison info. I suspected that might be the case since no one ever said much about it here.
We plan to camp and fish in the Mayfield canyon area in July. It may be too snowy to get over the top into Ferron Reservoir and Duck Fork, so we may end up at Twin or Town. Acey

[indent]Gunnison is one of Utah best Carp produseing lakes of all times!!!! with not much else in there not a lot to look forword too... i did catch a 17 lbs catfish there earler this year.. but have been there 4 times this spring and only 1 catfish... but lot's of big 12 to 15 lbs carp!!!!!! got to say good job to the DWR on that one!!

Nine mile as been stocked with lot's on fingerling tigers and bow's will not be all that good tell ice up or next spring... side note lot's lot's of carp showing up on the ice at nine mile this winter so another lake to catch them in the area just what we need!!

paliSades is ok if ya want to fight the kidd's swiming around ya and paying to get in the park.. ya can fish down by the dam for free but not much parking and lot's of others there too...

better fishing up fairview.. and when the road opens up to joes valley and grassy lake.. and much more up on top of the moutain too..

Hit Nine mile about three weeks ago and didn't catch a thing? That is unusual for me there we have always caught some decent fish trolling willow pop gear and a red wedding ring tipped with worm over by the inlet.
We also hit PaliSades with decent success on planters even my granddaughter caught he first slimer Smile You are not allowed to have a gas powered motor on the lake so if you got a electric bring it with you, If you also have a fish finder you may be able to see where the tigers are hanging out and drop some tube jigs tip with chub or worm to try to entice them to bite.
Fuzzy know that place like the back of his hand and has given you great advice.[Wink]

So when you say tigers, are you referring to trout or muskies? I heard they planted tiger trout in nine mile recently. Did they put tiger trout in PaliSades also? Years ago I fished Bench's Pond, and Gooseberry up Fairview Canyon, but I have never been to Joe's Valley or Grassy. Sounds like there is a lot to explore if I can find the time and the gas money to do it. What fishable lakes are there up Manti Canyon. Last fall I saw a small pond off the road above town (Duggins?) that looked fun to take the kids to but did not have fishing gear with me. Does the DWR plant it often? Thanks for the info. Acey

Yearns is up Manti Canyon. They keep it well stocked. Like my dad says, "If you can't catch fish there, you shouldn't be fishing." [fishin]

That is a pretty nice fish. Years ago I fished Floating Island on Thousand Lake mountain and caught some small tiger trout. I have never seen one that big. Were you just letting the guy hold "your" fish for you while you took the picture? Acey

[#0000ff]That fish was actually the second state record to come out of PaliSade in less than a year. The record status for the first one had not even been completely processed before the second and bigger one was caught. There were some nice fish taken during a short time. Since then the real bigguns have been scarce but there are usually some braggin' tigers to be caught...if you can wade through the dinks.[/#0000ff]
