I gotta swallow my pride. My bro-in-law and I am bringing my blue canoe to Willard in pursuit of the elusive wiper. I've caught one, my partner zero. We hope to get into some boils but will start trolling with a down rigger and long lining. I also bought 2 planers from sportsmans warehouse, a $10 cheapy and a yellow $29 one. Never used one before but some of you more experienced ones use them constistently. I assume the planers will keep the lures running shallow unless i use deep diving lures.
I bought several ratl shad lures.
We plan on launching at the south marina to freeway bay, then onto the middle or launch on the north marina and troll toward the litehouse. Any advice which?
Has anyone seen boils?
Whats your opinion on downriggers?
We will most likely chase boils. We are going to try to find deeper water.
I'll keep you posted on what happens. Any tips will be appreciated.

I am no pro but I have caught them on the Clackin Raps.
I have not seen any boils as of yet this year but then again I have only been up there about 4 times.
I have never used a down rigger there being as it is not really deep enough for me to see the need to use one. I could be wrong however.

last week we didn't catch any in freeway bay, all our fish came from south of the southern marina a ways off shore. Don't think the boils are happening yet

If you wanna hit some boils on this trip I recommend about a 60 day supply food, water and fuel.

Boils late July early aug if there is a good Shad hatch.
Otherwise troll Shad raps or Shad imitation lures at a fast trolling speed... Good luck[fishon]

You dont need no stinkin' downriggers at willard. it isnt that deep.... and wipers are in the mid'depth. You can longline rattletraps or attach the line to the planer boards and keep it to the side of the boat because wipers tend to move to the side of the boat keep a tight line on your planer and watch it dip about 30 ft off to the side of your boat.
If that doesnt work, you can use bottom bouncers with certain colored spinner and crawler harness, youll get into both walleyes and wipers that way. just keep your line tight and feel it tickin' as you slow the boat to 0.5 mph. Good luck marathon man!

I swear most of those lures photographed however two things:
1. I have never used kastmasters on wipers... very interesting! I'll try that to see if it produces.
2. most of my rattletrap lures has feathers with a silver mylar strip attached to the end of my treble... that works so much better than if there were no feathers/mylar. I swear by them!
