Multi Species Bonanza! Bear/Newton - MUSKY ON!
#1
Short Story: Caught lots of different fish. Hooked up some Musky. Kept a stringer of Perchies!

Saturday - watched the Doppler as storms raged across the south, and the north taunted with occasional sunshine. Made the right choice and waited it out till Sunday's clear skies! What a great day to be out and about!

Headed to Newton "early" Sunday. Stopped by for a Church Session around 9, and for a spot I've NEVER caught a single fish - it was the Bonanza Day! Tally: Bluegill/Sunfish, Crappie, Carp, MudCats, Bass. NONE had much of any size to them, but dang if I didn't get on a few species. Loads of bitty bluegills - figure some may/were sunfish. What do you call a blue-gill with no spot? A single crappie (kept thinking I had a crappie - but only pale bluegills). Didn't take pictures cuz they were babies (and somebody'd give me carp) but they were non-stop, so - entertaining. But got into two bass - one at 10 inches, no record, but a tugger all the same.

After a couple hours, I packed up and headed over to Newton. ONE trailer in the lot. NICE! A number of bank-tanglers, couple campers, plenty of target shooters. Bolted up to the "island" to hit some wood. Parked up and started getting into my beloved perchlets. It was so windy - I couldn't find the log I'd spotted up last week. Water was higher than last week - up to above the first cement block of the launch (guess the rains?).

But I got onto some bigger class perch - 8+ inchers are pretty good in my book for this lake. Wasn't finding the bass, but the perch kept me PLENTY busy. Even trained one of TDs new lures to swim, catch and retrieve! Drop shot rig was happening. Big long worm hook helped me set free the dinkers while I filled my stringer with the keeper class. Switched up to a spinner rig, and found I had some weight on the line. Thought I'd hooked into a big-ass bass - light drag setting, and I was going NOWHERE, then saw some silver flash- YUP Musky On! (figures - I switch down to the light pole, 6lb test, reel with crappy drag!). Tightened down, and worked her in. Got a couple surface lifts to get a good look. Got her boatside and prepped the net, gloves. After a subsurface "Smile" for the camera boatside - she decided to take her leave. Ok by me. Running solo - not gonna get that trophy photo anyway - and can guestimate some 30+ inches of beasty.

So I continue pitching for perch - lots of pinks and plunks. The perch-pattern spinner was a hit. And another hit, and another. I was concerned that my stringer of perch might become bait dangling boatside. Was too busy with the one rod, so dropped a perch pattern "Bagley Belly Button Bucktail Jig" off the other rod in the holder - with a chunk of perch-rib. They say Musky are the fish of 1000 casts. Well I done caught my "cast off" Musky. Now it was time for the passive-aggressive approach(playing "easy" to get?). While I'm busy perch pitching - my other rod starts jiggling, then as I lift up - it takes off. Tighten down the drag, and yup- musky on. Worked er up to boatside for a photo-shoot. Couple big Smiles, a few leaps - what a pretty fish. Might have been the same one - as I was in HER territory. Was prepping the pliers for a boatside release, and she helped with a big shake. Nice. Thems got some teeth!
So it worked once, it worked twice. Passive rod got bobbing! Second time - I reel in my active rod with a perch on (again) - then decide to pull up the anchor too - just in case, as he'd already gone under the boat. Too late - two wraps already, Dang! Got one loop free - then a run, ping - musky off. So if you want to try one of these perch jigs - go find it! It's out there (shoot).

Moved around the island to another log, and the dropshot was KILLER! Dunk to the bottom, and pink - everytime - basslings, or decent perch. Game was ON! Nonstop action!
Of course there has to be ONE ski-boat come out (that's all it takes) to stir things up. Had been SO calm and peaceful ALL afternoon, and one single boat comes to cast waves. The island hoppers finally gave them some words as they buzzed CLOSE by. The danged kid couldn't even get it up - so they kept trying, and trying, and trying!!!

Finally the wind died down, and I made my way back at sunset. GREAT day to be out, LOTS of fish - good fish, good variety (7/8 species), got my Musky On! Yeah Baby!

I'm almost embarrassed to say they came after ME the way they did - when I know folks like you work HARD to track them down.
I was just lucky - is all I can say. Must say though - it's a testament to that jig - if a musky'll pass up a stringer of REAL splashing trapped perch for a fake. Wish I hadn't lost that one. Go find it bud - it's all yours!

Maybe next time I'll get some company - so I can get one of them "trophy" photos like you have - so many times over! For me - it was a 'good enuf' catch - see them, control them, set them free. Works.

I do likes my perch. Would love to track down them foot-longs like they find at Starvation, but don't think - as you say - the Musky let that happen. They do dominate that lake pretty good. Seems like PV, Hyrum - are all in a "mid-size" mode for perch. But from what I hear - they go through cycles. Hopefully we're on an upswing!
Harder to find the Crappie up there for sure.

It's a good time for anglers at that puddle. I DO like FALL there - not so much a fan of summer. Damned powersquad!

Yup - already got yer answer on that one. Some things in life are free.
There's something of a 'campground' along the dike on the south side, but from what I've seen - it seems like a free-for all. Over the 4th there were campers parked along the roadway - all around the boat-launch parking area up to the rope swing, and over on the west side. Pretty much unregulated, no "sites" so much as "spots".

There are normally some porta-potties up there, but the ones by the launch-parking were gone this time. (out for cleaning?) There's no running water I know of - so it's basically rustic camping.

No launch fees at the "ramp" - what there is of it. And be prepared - there's a shooting 'range' at the SE corner - I don't know WHAT they were blowing off - (I think it came from the west side) - but expect a lot of boom-bangs. Sounded like a stick of dynamite as I was packing up. WORD! Shook MY rattle trap!

I thought you and your bro would enjoy that stringer shot - now I'm debating how to prep them pups. Stayed up WAY too late filleting last night. Luck be had - a 'warm' beer batter recipe in my latest In-Fisherman mag. Must be a sign! Actually mixes warm beer and yeast. Hmmm.
Wish (as always) they were bigger, but was glad to get onto the 8" plus class, as opposed to weeding through 6"-minus dinkers.

Thank Bryce - the one I was psyched about was the sucker that took MY home-made spinner rig. (the one in the perch-pic). Simple but effective. Caught me by surprise for sure - again - pitching for panfish, and hookup a monster! I LOVE it! Drag set so loose - I didn't even realize what I had on - reel reel - going NOWHERE - then tighten down - and WEIGHT. Yeah - THAT was fun. (and don't get me wrong - I have pitched, and pitched, and pitched that water...)

The jig-grabbers were accidents, but happy accidents - I'll take it! Just wish I'd gotten the lure out of that last one - was SO close to that last wrap of the anchor cord. Damn! Pretty sure he'll find his way ok. When the perch/bass are so active - I find the second pole more of a distraction, or waste of worms. Trolling - is why/where I got it for - mostly. More options.
Never done squat for trolling out there, though I figure I might as well try when I'm on may way somewhere.

Had a bud at work that attested to the "structure" notion - not much out there, so what there is - they (bass esp) hold up to. Now without all the traffic - water should be clearing up some too. Good deal for the anglers!
Bring on the pumpkins I say! I love the FALL!

Bit of followup. After a long fillet session - nice chunks of boneless skinless tender perch meat.

Spread on a pan, and sprinkled with:
salt
black pepper
lemon pepper
bit of Cajun seasoning
garlic
onion flakes
then drizzled with Extra Virgin Olive Oil, let sit for 30 mins after squishing around in a plastic bag.

Seasoned Fillets:

Rolled in Cornmeal

then lightly baked at 350 in a Pyrex baking tray lightly coated with Olive Oil and Butter.
Then squirted with lemon juice, and served.

Didn't take a shot of em plated up. But served with White rice and mixed veggies. My daughter went back for thirds!
I split the batch of fillets in half, so thinking to try a beer-batter-fry on the other set.
I do enjoy them Yellow Perch!

Worked down in Utah County the past 2 days. So I hit up Cabela's and loaded up on new stuff to try - including "The Fish Grip" for any future TM victims. Might have time to wet my lines tomorrow evening and try some new lures!
