I am more of a freshwater fisherman myself. Although I am starting to gear back up a bit for saltwater.

One of my favorite places to fish is in Bishop CA. It is a bit of a drive so I cannot go that often. There is good trout fishing up there and there are some ponds just southeast of the downtown area that produce some good LMB, smallies and even some respectable bluegill and perch.

Those ponds(which are called Saunders Ponds) are also well known for the cats that are there. Not very big ones but something worthwhile to toy around with.

The LMB are usually caught with Panther Martin frogs. There is usually a good a.m. bite with some around for the p.m. bite. But the bigger ones have been caught up there during phases of a full moon.

The blue gills and perch both like good ole crawlers and have a fine fancying for brown Rooster Tails.

The smallies on the other hand fancy brown Rooster Tails and really get fired up with pumkin seed power grubbs. After dark, the smallies generally prefer a nice crawdad slowly pulled across the bottom.

Then you have the planted as well as hold over rainbows. They generally do well on the floating power bait in the Owens River. Be sure to bring plenty of different colors as they do change their preference about every 20 minutes. It drives you crazy just trying to figure out the next color as they decide to make their change.

There are also native Brown Trout pretty much throughout the Owens River as well as Bishop Creek. They always honor a floated night crawler as their favorite and will hit from time to time in the early morning on the good ol' Wooly Bugger.

[cool] When I am close to home, my favorite spot of course is Castaic Lagoon. They have some respectable bank and pier fishing as well as allowing float tubes.

In the Lagoon there are primarily blue gills, sunfish, crappie, some trout, heard about cats, and some very respectable Large Mouth Bass. Just PM me anytime that you would like to meet up over there. Let me know if you want to go tube or tubless.

Hey there fishfather,

My favorite spot is Santa Catalina island hands down. When the weather is clear and warm, water clarity at 25 feet, slight breeze, a gentle downhill current on the frontside, and healthy kelp growth I figure I'll pretty close to heaven. Especially when one of the many bald eagles circle once, makes a fairly long approach then swoops down, talons extended, to grab a fish in the water less than 50 feet away from the boat. Oh man!

I hear yah JR. It was so hard for me I could only mention counties[laugh]

Me and my friend's sometimes will go over there on a Friday, stay until Sunday and rent a fishing boat all day Saturday.

It is great! Just me and him and beer and snacks and a tub full of fish at the end of the day.

We came back in the pier loaded down with bass, perch, etc. We kept what we wanted for dinner that night, packed some on ice and gave the rest away.[cool]

Good time. Alittle exspensive but not to bad if you do it like once a year[Wink]

Hi there Fishfater,
I recently became interested in surf fishing. I fish on the left side of the sealbeach pier about 100 yards from the rocks. I went there yesterday, for about three hours and didnt do to bad. I caught a 19 inch flounder a 13 inch flounder, a bat ray, and two of what looks like a spiny back sting ray. I also got a solid hit when my reel was on clicker, but as usual as soon as you pick it up the fish is gone.[:/] The best bait to use is strips of makerel.

The best bait is what works[Wink] That's my experience. But some fish prefer certain one bait over another.

For instance Halibut. They love live smelt or anchovies, sometimes shrimp too.

I do not surf fish alot anymore since getting into tubing so I could tell you alot of good spots.[unsure]

Squid always works good too[Wink]

Hi there fishfather,

I just realized I just put my vote in for only saltwater fishing! My favorite place to fish and camp for my freshwater fishing in California is the June Loop, specifically Grant for Browns and June Lake for Rainbows and smallish Browns.

Ah.. the air, the trees, the dirt huh!? .... er..the fishies in both the lakes and the streams.

Fall fishing will kick in pretty soon, if not already. Alas, I have a bathroom to completely remodel subfloor to ceiling ventilation.

Nice topic.

Tell me about! Did the kitchen not to long ago, then I just painted the living room, dining room and hallway. It was a mess.[unsure]

Look great now! Went with this toasted green for the walls and ultra white for trim.[sly]

Wife is really happy which means the world will spin again[Tongue]
