Lake Mary #3 (3-11)

Went up to Lake Mary after my buddy ditched out on Fish Lake. I thought "where can I get a shot at a laker?" SOLD to Mary! I skinned up and arrived at 9am after another friendly chat with an interested ski patroler. I started with a lost fish thanks to the tandem rig catching on the ice hole. Things were slow till noon when I caught the 1st brookie of the day at 12 inches. Then a backcountry skier came by and was shocked to see me fishing! I told him "well I have a 2nd rod if ya want". He took the bait. He fished with me till 5pm. He watched me catch 2 more fish and drilled a few holes with me. The biggest brookie yet was captured........ 16 inches long!!!

Charlie got the skunk but he caught a new friend. I tried to teach the rookie how to catch a brookie but it was to no avail. By 5:30pm he had to bail so I gave him a ride in my car back to my house and donated 2 of my smaller my fish to him. He was greatful and I took him back to his apartment with a on his face. The ice was 4 feet thick!! hock: Really tough with my hand auger to get 5 holes dug. Luckily I got an extension made by Tube Dude. SPECIAL THANKS TO TUBE DUDE FOR MAKING THIS TRIP POSSIBLE.

We were using pumpkin pepper jigs and powerbait green glow jigs. The best bait was sucker meat and nightcrawlers had the most bites. Missed a ton of bites today with the nightcrawlers.

The brighton lifties have as much style as me!

[cool][#0000ff]I'm just raggin' on Da Boys. Hats off to them (and their hair). They got the youthful enthusiasm and the energy to go for the (frozen) gusto. I'd never make it...probably even with a snowmobile.[/#0000ff]

[#0000ff]It goes without saying that it would be a bear to lug a power auger up to one of those lakes. About the only option is a hand auger. Most of us ice tangler types wimp out with hand augers when the ice gets over about 12 inches. But these guys literally got the hair to tackle it when it gets three times that. Only problem is that hand augers don't cut that deep...without an extension. And auger makers do not make extensions for hand augers. Sooooo...they tagged me to help them come up with something that would serve as an extension. A piece of 3/4" conduit and a couple of 1/4" bolts and wing nuts seemed to get 'er done.[/#0000ff]

Sure did do the trick.

Left my pliers in the car and I had to ski that thing down in my arm. Looked like a Jouster from midevil times on the way down.[laugh] My new buddy called it my baddle axe and laughed that I had that stringer swinging from my backpack. He said I looked like I came from battle or something.

Man, that is a sweet brookie! They are by far my favorite trout to catch. So pretty!

Man, packing a hand auger + extension up to a lake that has 4 feet of ice up in the mountains. That is commendable sir. Hats off to you, that is seriously badass! So what style should I be practicing for these starvy walleyes? Vertical jiging from a toon perhaps? I am commited to getting my 1st one this year!

[#0000ff]The good news about Starvation walleyes is that you really don't have to learn a lot of fancy new stuff. On any given day you can catch them on your spinners and crankbaits...or on large plastics or small plastics. They will hit lures being retrieved along the bottom...but will also sometimes hit at middepth. [/#0000ff]

[#0000ff]Probably best on many days is either bottom bouncing or vertical jigging with some kind of jig with a chunk of worm on it. And on some days in June you will have a hard time finding something they WILL NOT hit. If you are where the fish are you WILL get bit.[/#0000ff]

[#0000ff]As you might expect, the conditions change during the year...water levels drop, temperatures rise and the food supplies change and move around. The walleyes follow the food. It does help if you know the lake a bit after several years of fishing it throughout the changing seasons. But if you get good 411 from someone who has just fished it you can at least go to the right areas and have a shot at success. Even better is to go with someone who can put you on the fish.[/#0000ff]

i bet that ice is 40 inches thick up there. i never made it up there with you guys this winter due to my job but i plan on some spring or summer trips this year. but on 2nd thought if the ice is that thick i might have a chance to hit it after all. nice report
