The end of the backcountry ski & fishing adventures 5-27
#1
Lake Mary - So with all the new snow it was hard to ignore a powder day and we wanted to fish alone today! Well it was also time to check out the ice off action too! So we hit the brighton lot at 4:30pm and started up the snow on the skins and skis. It was boney! Yep only the new snow was there, luckily that was 6 to 8 inches worth....just enough. So we got to the moment of truth at 5:30pm and held our breath for the sight. Luckily there was a spot to cast out to the goods. We were on the wrong side so it was a hell of a skin (hike) to get there. Those sidewalls are STEEP!

We flung the tackle at 6pm right next to 2 poles that were in the water. Thats right we were not alone. We fished for an hour with rapalas, jigs, spinners, worm and bobbers and worms on the bottom with nothing to show for it. Sure enough the owner of the poles came back and reeled in a brookie. He was using a worm on the bottom. Apparently the guy said the lake was slush an hour before we showed up and that all the slush was frozen ice now. That was his only fish. We left at 7pm and chatted at his fire to warm up. By 8:25pm we started the hike down as the father and son were camping up there.

Yep the first half mile we kept the skins on to reduce speed over the rocks. The last half mile was SUPREME POWDER! Yummy and creamy it made us forget the troubles endured to get there. By 9:05pm (record longest to get out of Mary) we were getting in the car when a forest service cop pulled up. He told us that our hair made him think we were up to no good. Well after a half an hour he got to know us and realized that we were 2 great guys. He told us to watch for deer and man he was right. They were all over the road tonight! I might have dropped my head lamp up there. If anybody finds it let me know.

The snow was really coming down at the trailhead

The rest of the "un-fishable" Lake Mary on our way out near dark. No wonder the mountain in the background is called Sunset Peak.

Thanks for your posts. Keep it up. I was just wondering: If you cut your hair, would your peers judge you negatively?

Typically my "peers" (my age group and such) like the hair a lot. It tends to be the "older" generations that have such an issue with it. I wear a hat from time to time and people do treat me differently when I have it on instead of the spikes. Especially in provo!

Cathrine is locked up in ice gaurnteed. I saw that Cathrine is actualy spelled Kathrine on the sign. Never saw that sign until now as it is usually burried under the snowpack.

We could hear Martha give out loud cracks and booms and from what we saw it was locked up with ice.

Both Mary and Kathrine are "snow travel" right now. Snowshoes for a few parts might be a good idea! You will have a hell of a time getting to Kathrine without them.
