Jsb and I got on the water before sunrise. Thought I'd get in some practice for Saturday's CFF Tournament. We started in shallow water with Spooks, Sammys, and buzzbaits. Nothing, nada, zilch. Not even a blowup. It didn't look like it was going to be a good day.
Wrong.
Ran to an area that I'd often passed up but never fished. We found tons of brushpiles. All of them seemed to hold fish. We depended on Texas rigged worms and craws in variuos colors and styles. Started catching fish almost immediately. We had a small 3 fish limit in 10 minutes before John slams the hook home on a 4+ lber. Shortly thereafter, he boats a 5+ on his favorite Zoom Vibra Tail worm. I catch 2-3 3lbers and some smaller keepers. I tie a Net Bait Baby Paca Craw on a football head jig that I buy from Hippi97 and begin to drag it across the bottom. I feel a peck and set the hook on a 6+ lber that shoots 5 feet out of the water like a rocket. Never saw a fish jump that high. It was well hooked so I was able to muscle it to the boat. While removing the hook, I see the tail of a shad 4" wide sticking out of it's throat. She didn't Bite my craw because she was hungry. She bit because she was on her nest. Yep...a spawning female. Fat belly and bloody tail.
We caught a few more 3 lbers but none would help. Our best 3 weighed close to (if not more than) 16 lbs. Best 5 would've gone 22+ lbs. I've got pictures on my phone but will only post John's 5 lber. All the others may give away the location.
The cloud cover probably helped the bite today. Hoping for the same Saturday.
