Rude behavior on the Provo
#1
A buddy and I come to Utah twice a year to fish the Provo, Strawberry, Pinnacles etc. Yes, we are out of staters, but we pay for the non resident license and hire a guide.
This week on the middle Provo we had a strange encounter. While fishing a nice hole on the Middle Provo, with a guide, another fisherman, on the other side of the river walked up and threw his line in the same spot I was fishing. The seam couldn't have been 3 feet across, he said there was no way I could get a good drift on it anyway. We couldn't have been 15 feet apart! After a few words back and forth between myself, the guide and the interloper, he told us to go back to California and that the river wasn't for out of staters. I have never seen such lack of manners or class on a stream. Every fly fisherman I have ever met has been kind, friendly, and generous with info.
The people of Utah are extremely nice people, especially the fy fishermen. Being from the East Coast, I know what rude is! Maybe this guy was from the out of state. I hope none of you run into him.

For myself and my friends that fish the Provo, I do apologize on behalf of the FF and the guides. I am sure there is one or two of these ignorant people everywhere you go. Hope he didn't totally ruin your visit.

Thanks for your thoughts. Yes, they are everywhere, and I wouldn't dare let him ruin a trip to beautiful Utah.

oh dang!!!! About 13 yeas ago I was fishing fernan lake in coeur d alene idaho with worms and saw a guy pulling in crappie after crappie. I was getting nothing. I asked my lil brother dang how is he catching all those fish? He heard me and called me to his truck. Told me some tips and showed me what he was fishing with. JIGS!!!! Then he asked where do I live by and I told him I actually dont know because I just moved out here from San Jose California. He grumbled some bad words and said this place might as well be called lil California and threw his jigs at me and my brother stormed off and left in his truck. When out fishing I never once got mad or raised my voice at my kids in anger. Fishing is so peaceful it takes alot to get me mad even if someone fishes right where I am or my line get caught with another anglers because they decided to fish right where I was fishing. I dont even care if I was there first i just move on. None of these bodies of water in the world belong to me or anyone else who reads this! They belong to Mother Earth

Sorry for your experience. First off friends don't let friends fish the Middle Provo (MP). I even have a friend of a friend coming to Utah in a week that inquired about the place. He has been warned that very few fish aren't stunted and experiences like yours seem to occur there more than any other Utah water. Next time you come out shoot me a PM and I'll put you onto some much more productive streams and a better fishing experience.
FYI: UOTF seems to have a heavy tilt toward the MP. Maybe you post there because of your target audience or maybe just stay away knowing that.

Thanks for all the comments. Really didn't get mad, just fabbergasted that things like that happen even in paradise.

We did get around, fishing the Strawberry, and the Strawberry at the Pinnacles. Also the Duchense. It was a great trip all around, but then again they all are.

I hope none of us _is_ him. (Especially FG. That would be just too weird.)

That really sucks. Next time, take a picture of him and post it here. If any of us know him, ....

There are 2 populations of fly fishermen in the state of Utah that I prefer to never run in to: 1) complete jerks 2) clueless idiots... and 95% of both groups tend to frequent the MP and LP exclusively.

The MP is great for a quick fly fishing fix due to its proximity/large number of trout/good hatches/etc. However, there are so many amazing fishing opportunities in Utah I'd suggest doing your research, driving another 30-90 minutes, and completely avoiding the place if you're already coming from California!

I think he only counts as a 'little dog' for someone who owns Great Danes or Bull Mastiffs. Or horses. [:p]

I went to the Middle Provo once last summer on a Saturday. It was like waiting in line for ride at Disneyland on a busy day--except without the Fast Passes.

That sucks, and thanks to our awesome stream access bill the crowds are only getting worse and worse with less public access. I have pretty much stopped fly fishing in Utah due to all the Utards on the water....besides the best fishing in Utah is in Wyoming!

The courts already overturned that law as unconstitutional from what I understand.
But that never stopped people from being cited for exercising their American Rights between that last 2 time this right was upheld by the Utah Supreme Court.

And Wyoming sucks- all the fish died in the drought and they now charge people from Utah $1000 for a license. I did post about some rude behavior I encountered last year in Wyoming-- of course they had Utah plates. Wish they'd just stick with the great MP.

I run into rudey's all over the place (Utah and Wyoming) and most of the time it's the guides in their high-priced Hyde's and rich clients. I hate to sound this way, but I think they feel that they own the rivers (at least the one's I frequent) and are entitled to special treatment. Most of the bank fishermen I run into are very courteous!

What did your guide do? I've had guides that have all but gone to war over improprieties like this.

What?? There is nothing accurate about either of those statements.

Judge Pullan's ruling did NOT overturn HB-141. Please don't anyone go running off thinking Utah waters are now open game.

Wyoming Non-resident fishing license is $94.00.
