Looks good just remember to tie different sizes and colors I have done well with pink and gray also green. Try to catch some bugs when you are out to match

I don't tie but that's my favorite fly for golden trout. I'm pretty sure LaFontaine was the inventor of the rollover scud. As FG alluded it traditionally has mono sticking out over the hookeye. Now other scuds do have fibers off the rear so don't see why the pattern wouldn't work. I think the action of this fly is the critical part.
Not being someone that ties this is the one fly that I find both hard and expensive to get. If anyone ever wants to accept some orders for it let me know.

Just a little artistic flare on my part, not sure if it will work. I will find out if it attracts gold on my trip to the winds this summer. Besides I need all of the practice I can get, I will make several versions over the next few months. I did find a version online that uses Ostrich herl instead of dubbing.

I use the Ostrich a lot (Ray Charles) But dubbing is my main choice as I can make #18 and #20.
The tuft out the back is fine and on many versions.
However, yours is sticking up instead of following the bend of the hook. This will effect how it float, which can be a great thing, or very bad.
The tuft is their tail so to speak and legs, make sure it is soft and wiggles a lot. Off the front they can be stiffer.
I will say, EXPERIMENT! by all means. I am sure that is HOW these patterns came to be.
I will experiment with colors, and I too will do variations to given patterns on waters I am familiar with, such as ORANGE Griffith Gnats in the Uinta's.
But, waters I am not familiar with, I will stick with the given design with variations only in sizes and colors.
Keep up the great work. As I was quoted for saying in Idaho[blush] You are an artist when tying and you can create anything you want. Some masterpieces, some ..... not so much LOL

Using them on the Webe would be like feeding the squirrels macadamia nuts when peanuts will work fine[laugh]. Unless you tie up 10 dozen save them for the goldens in the Winds. I'm already planning a trip there next summer as well.

your probly right on that but it still looks killer. i love the different scud/sow bug patterns right now especially, looks like the ice will be starting here quick so i might hand up the fly rod for a few months.[frown]

It is a great pattern and a killer tie.
As you mentioned, you are a beginner, so I offered some advise.
The thing is with fly tying, is it all has a reason. The right hook for the job, the right material. Some material may look the same, but does it change colors when wet, does it absorb or repel water. Even the right feather is important.
When tying someone elses pattern, I try to copy everything other wise I might not get the right effect costing hook-ups on fish. Left with the feeling, this pattern doesn't work. That is all I am trying to put on the table.
Using the right material, but in different colors or different size is different. That is a must in my book.
