Dunno what to think -- The idea that the best protection from a bad guy with a gun is a good guy with one holds up for me. Question is, how the hell are we gonna pay for it? Pretty soon we're gonna have to put armed police in every shopping center, gorcery store and convenience store - ad nauseum.
One thing that's gotta happen and, I submit, the sooner the better is to train the police to not quit shooting until the offender is no longer a threat of any sort at all. What's the cost of another twenty or so rounds of ammo compared to the cost of trial, appeals, incarceration etc. to society as a whole?

More trained concealed carry. That includes school personnel.
All that "gun free zones" mean is that innocent people are unprotected from troubled and evil people. The bad guys will always have guns no matter what the law is.

Any place that prohibits guns should be REQUIRED to pay for sufficient security forces to thwart homicidal maniacs. If you want to declare your mall, your theater, your school a "gun free zone" then you bear the responsibility to protect every unarmed person there. That's it, plain and simple.

We need a corporate tax, then we have the money to pay for it. If corporations want to be part of society, then they need to pay there part like the rest of us. No more fancy tax deductions and loop holes.

Well, it is as good of an idea as outlawing guns. They were saying the cost would be in the billions of dollars, if they paid the guards $50,000 each.

No, no. The Goobermint doesn't pay for the guards - the goobermint needs to keep its fat nose out of commerce, period.
But if a mall owner (corporation) wants to put up "No Guns Allowed" signs, then it would be required by law to provide the security that lawful gun possession would have provided. Ditto for theaters and churches. Schools would be local government, of course. If such a mall or theater doesn't want to pay for guards, then don't put up the sign.
Better yet, put up a sign that says, "Licensed concealed weapons welcome here." I can guarantee you that place would never have a nutso shooter. Security for free.

Geezer,
I can assure you that the cops are being trained to shoot until the threat has been neutralized.

A) I was reffering to UT, not the nation.
B) Steve Jobs, in his last meeting with Pres. Obama, said it's more about labor rights. You can't make U.S. workers live in company baracks, shop at company stores, etc. You can't make U.S. workers work a 12 hr shift, send them home, and then call them back three hrs later for a mandatory 12 hr shift then their own 12 hr shift (this was the run up to iPhone 4 production). Nor is it easy to cheat them out of overtime pay.
Additionaly, Jobs cited a lack of skilled labor. The iMac production that is coming to the U.S. will be ramped up slowly while foxconn teaches the U.S. workers the skills they'll need.
While there are jobs that come and go with taxes, they're mainly low skill lower paying jobs. The jobs that pay well mainly vary based on skills in an area. As U.S. laborers become less skilled, the jobs leave.

In regards to armed guards at school and how to pay for them. My wife is a school teacher, and her school as well as many of the schools in her district are terrible at actually securing the building the way they are supposed to. Anybody who thinks that some nut is going to walk in the front door and go check in at the office is dreaming. Parent don't do this. I myself have walked into the school, down the hall ways to my wifes room, and not once been asked who i was. Armed guards will only work if the buildings are actually secured properly. Second of all everybody says how exprensive it would be to pay for them all. I call bull crap. There is more money wasted in the school districts than you can ever imagine. For one example, my wifes school had $75,000 to use or loose. They spent a small portion of it going to park city, riding the alpine slide, paying for dinner for all facultly that attended, (They were not at mcdonalds either.) A night stay in a hotel, and then had some speaker come talk about something stupid. Im sure they had enough left over to pay an armed guard a very good salary.
I just find it interesting that alll the people that make the decision about were guns should be or not be all sit behind the protection of guns. Maybe somebody should tell congress that if we loose our guns and protection they loose theirs as well.

I'm retired and would be willing to volunteer to do a job like that. I'll bet there are enough people like me that we could cover all our schools. I'm a former Marine, a damn good shot and, hopefully, of a cool headed enough mindset to not be going off half cocked. If these people knew they were gonna face an armed defense, they might think twice. Dunno.

Cheaper alternative too armed guards: A) provide people with the mental healthcare they need. B) all firearms transactions go through an ffl holder who does a bcs check.

I couldn't agree more Rocky!
A few other comments from responses on this thread.
99% of idiots trying to ban so called "assault weapons" wouldn't know what one is.
Concealed carry in schools or anywhere is the safest way to stop these evil people.
Cops are absolutely trained to keep shooting until the threat isn't one anymore.
As for corporate loopholes, please fill me in on how to take advantage of those. I own a small S corp, and I get nailed hard by the IRS. If you want to actually end tax cheats and make everyone "pay their fair share" do a flat sales tax. Nobody could dodge it then and those who pay nothing will pay their fair share (including all illegal money such as drug dealers etc). The socialist trend of half the Country paying for 100% of the Country needs to end immediately.
