i tried to dive in the ice hole head frist try to get my line but my fat butt wouldn't fit i think i need a bigger auger or i need to find 2 more poles that i like that have a back bone to set the hook in big fish in shallow water ( 4' FOW) and you should of see the bigger one swimming with the one i hooked we did get a few tigers in the 18 to 19 inch range and 20 or so other bows cut and tiger that were just small can't belve my st. Been there and done that. In my case it was the result of one of my "monster hook sets" that I am unfortunately famous for.

I think you need to fix your story here.
It sounds to me like the fish was so big that when you set the hook it broke your line because it wouldn't even budge.
I am obviously hearing this story 2nd hand, but to me, it sounds like thats what happened. [ ][fishon]

It was only about a 5 or 6 pound cutt at Bear Lake, and yes the rod broke entirely off from the handle, just like yours did, except that I was left with enough of the rod still attached to the handle that TD was able to repair it. I was able to grab the rod before it fell down the hole and we almost landed the fish, but it broke off at the hole (a guy tried to lift it straight out of the hole by the line).

it was a big tiger i seen him clearly just shallow water and a solid hook set the light rod could not take it and some how my line got wraped up in the broken pole and snaped it also i fish ten pound test stren line and rarely have problems getting 8 plus pound trout through the hole

Is that what happened to that rod? I was wondering about that when I was picking up my jigs.

You most likely nicked the rod right there while transporting it. I have seen fly rods and full size spin casts bust right there as well. Once the clear coat finish on graphite rods, and some spun fiber fiberglass rods, once the clear coat is damaged the integrity of the rod goes way down. Ice fishing gear tends to get a little more beat up then other gear too.
But Heck I even had a deep sea rod sheer off like that with a medium sized halibut. It happens, sorry you lost your trophy!

Bummer man.
Guess you will have to get a meatstick rod for when you are fishing big tubes at that lake[ ]
I agree with you I think I'd be more upset about losing the Tiger than busting the rod[sly]

Believe it or not I have had the very same thing happen to me. I went to set the hook with a hard hook set for my little girl and the rod broke clean off at the handle.
Of course, it was a Barbie pole but I'm telling you it was a massive bluegill.

You should send it back to St. Croix. I would be surprised if they didn't give you a new one.

My brother is also famous for releasing fish when he's on the ice and the fish are down at 65 feet. There are a couple of things to remember. Some of the graphite and composite rods get more brittle in very cold temperatures. When fishing shallow you have less mono line that can stretch to absorb some of the shock. When you are fishing shallow, remember you don't need a backflip to make a hook set.
At the Gorge two years ago my brother snapped a rod and it sound like a .22 going off. He didn't think it was funny, but the rest of us got a good laugh out of it.

[#502800]We had an old Oregon guide tell us the handle is vulnerable as that is where the flex stops. My buddy had a salmon on and a sea lion got it and took off. The guide made him put the rod in the holder while the line was smoking out, to save the reel. As soon as the line ran out, the pole shatered right at the handle.[/#502800]
[#502800]He said sometimes you get lucky and the line breaks. If you can react fast enough, you can cut the line, but oftentimes the pole will break right at the handle.[/#502800]

I've got that same pole and I hate it for bigger fish, way to much flex. I lost a lot of fish at bear lake cause it didn't have the backbone to set the hook good, I would set the hook and then set it 5 more times and still couldn't get it past the barb. If you send it back they will replace it, St Croix is really good about that.
