Cats in the Snake?
#1
Just wondering, what is the furthest point upstream that anyone has ever caught catfish?

Milner Res. They are planted in there by Idaho Power. It is ok at best fishing. I would rather drive to Brownlee than fish Milner. The farthest up stream that cats naturally reproduce is CJ strike. Ron

Not true. I used to catch cats just below American Falls reservior when I was a kid. I expect there are some actually in the reservoir. Probably even above that.

I bet that those came from the stocking that happened in 1985 or maybe even a wash out maybe from Mctucker ponds.

The catfish population upstream and including CJ strike is not what I would consider a reasonable option for fishing for channel cats. I know there are a few in Strike, and yes they are in Milner all the way up to minadoka dam. Anything above that would be like another thread called fishing for unicorns. The population is so small due to a lack of natural recruitment, and the amount of water is so huge the chance of actually finding them is slim to none but not totally impossible. That is not the kind of odds I would find acceptable with gas prices the way they are. Like I said before I would rather spend two or three even 4 hours driving west than drive 50 minutes east. It is that big of a waste of time for me.

While my first post may not be "true" in the sense that it is possible a cat might be above Minadoka Dam. I am willing to bet that no one will actually catch any above Minadoka dam this year. If someone does they better buy a lotto ticket before their luck runs out. Ron

It isn't on the Snake River, so it may not be what you are looking for, but there are catfish stocked in Alexander Res on the Bear R.

Thanks everybody for the info, I was kinda curious if any cats had made it up as far as the Blackfoot to Roberts part of the river, it's sure easy to look at some those sections or the river and imagine it being full of big cats [shocked][shocked]

Why do I never see anyone ice fishing Alexander? Is there any size to them in there.

I don't know of anyone that ice fished it this year. I know that there used to be a fairly good ice fishery for perch in Alexander, but I think that when they drained it a few years ago it did that in.

If people are ice fishing it, it might be hard to see them from the road. Most of the ice fishing was in the area of 2nd bridge and the dam. The rest of the reservoir is pretty shallow.
