An Alvin fly. Trimming the Marabou on the tale takes away movement.

Well, it looks a bit like a minner what's been mugged for its lunch money - kinda.





Photo hint: Place a sheet of plain cardboard behind the fly next time, to eliminate the confusing background. If that's too dark, glue a sheet of copy paper to the cardboard. The copy paper also allows a good white balance if your camera has that feature.

Great attempt. You are not the first to try to make a fly look like a traditional lure. Heck they even sell the Rapala plastic diving lips for flies.
The problem may be more in the way it floats. It could spin when retrieving.
Most flies look nothing like anything in the water, but rather the color and movement.
Doing the same thing with Marabou or Rabbit will do the job "When Wet"
