Looking into elect. Downrigger
#1
I would like to get some opinions on.
Electric downriggers
I have a couple of cannon manuals right now,
The line counter is messed up on one of them.
I'm thinking of spoiling myself and getting a decent
Electric $500 and up.
I hit Strawberry and the Gorge & smaller waters
Comments welcome,

I have two manual cannon down riggers as well, the only time I wished I had electric down riggers, is when I am fishing alone. It is hard to fight the fish, kick the boat out of gear and raise the down rigger ball at the same time.

I have several canon electric down riggers and love them & going on 10 years. I have had some issues over the years; however, parts are easy to get and make repairs. I have never had a problem with the line counter.

If you can afford them, get them.
I love using electric downriggers.
You hit the switch when you get a fish on and by the time you boat it, your rigger is waiting to go back down.
Did I mention that I have a bad bad back?

The Cannon Magnum 5 ST Downrigger Electric is just as good as the Mag 10. I have one of each.

I'm looking for the same thing. Manuals are fine for 20-30' deep but go after Kokes on the gorge at 60-80' and those manuals get real tiring real fast. I would add Walkers to your pick list. Check out reviews at Cabelas on line. I like the Kokanee model myself, but I've had lots of friends that like Scotty and Cannons so it seems to be a Ford, Dodge, Chevy thing. Not sure what I'll pick. I run the cannon magnum stx 10's on my boat and love them. The 5's and the 10's are basically the same, but the 10's give you longer boom arms that are adjustable. It allows you to spread your presentations out a little more or reach over a deep transom. The cannon downriggers also give you the positive ion control built in. There are also dedicated ion control solutions out there.

I've read some on the ion deal, does it really work? Or is it a sales gimmick? Thanks J

To be honest, I don't know. But some very respected people in the fishing community swear by it. I spent a lot of time reading up on it and there are formal studies that say it works in general, not specifically cannon's implementation of it.

I have 2 big jon tournament models, they are great. 4 foot booms that lock in the up position when moving, fast motors. I'm not all that sold on the ion thing, but I do have the balls isolated from the cable. I don't have a problem catching fish with this setup.
good luck with what ever you get.

PIC is one of those 10% things . Successful fishing is the attention to detail and Positive Ion Control is one of those details. I'm a .55 to .65 fan. Bottom line is PIC comes on all Cannon downriggers and is super easy to use. It's even easier to forget about when you're catching fish! The voltage on both my cannon downriggers are .56 volts

[font "Comic Sans MS"][#800000][size 3]Cannon, Walker, or Scotty; its true, this is the same as discussing Ford, Chevy, or Dodge. There are going to be champions and detractors for all of them. I'm on my second set of Cannons (I upgraded to Mag 5s last year) and I'm very pleased with that companies products. I fish with a guy that has a set of Scotty's on his boat and loves them.

I also have a close friend in Michigan that fishes Lake Michigan for pleasure and for business. He won't run anything but Big Jon on his boats. And I know from him and from personal experiences fishing Lake Michigan that Big Jon's outnumber all the others combined on charter boats. In other words, if you want what the guys that fish for a living use, then you will buy a set of Big Jon's. But be advised; they ARE the most expensive.

I use Cannon's instead of Big Jon's because I have enough points at Cabela's to get them really cheap and Cabela's doesn't carry the Big Jon down-riggers.

I will add this con about Big Jon, the Company. My Michigan friend told me last year when I upgraded that the Big Jon Company had changed ownership and he had heard several complaints from Charter Boat Captains that the Big Jon Customer Service Department is less helpful/friendly under the new ownership. But they still make the very best down-rigger you can buy.

I just ordered two Scotty electrics. I can't wait to get them on. I liked the Scotty for one feature you may want to consider. They tip straight up in the air when not in use. Canon's don't, I don't have a lot of room when it comes to getting on and off the boat. My Dad is 74, fake knees, this will ensure he's not hopping over a downrigger boom.

I 'm from Mi., and you are right. Big Jon's dominate. Almost everyone "up-grades" to them..

I have fished with the Big Jon's on Lake MI. They appeared to work great and the guides love them. They are made in MI so service would be excellent for those guides and fishermen. I have a Big Jon tower and outrigger boat. I would like to find another one of their boats, good luck in UT. With the brand not really being sold here, I stuck with what I see in the stores in case I need service. I was left with Canon and Scotty, after talking with a buddy who has electronic Canon's, he's had an issue with the cable coming off of the pulley on the boom. He has to take it apart to get it back on which is a nightmare when you're on the water and it's not glass.

I love my Cannon digi troll iv the bottom tracking works great on the lakes where the contours are constantly changing just set it and forget it and they work independent from your finder. Worked great this weekend at the gorge!
