Technically skunked
#1
If I remember right, reports on community waters aren't really needed/wanted... BUT since I haven't been fishing in years, AND this water is new/temporary, I figured I'll give it a go anyway.

Decided to try Adams Reservoir in Layton. It opened last year, and will be closing December 2016.
I did not keep track of arrival time, but it was after 5:30 (because I was eating dinner then). I get there, and it's a little cloudy with a breeze...perfect! I puttered around with walking a bit to find a good spot. There's a brush area that would be perfect for bass. Also had a frog in it that had a yellowish belly - was going to take a picture, but when I stepped ONE step towards, it hopped back in the water. I wasn't even that close! Fidgety little critters.
This was a "lets check this place out" kind of trip, so I wasn't really trying all that hard. Used some power bait that has been in my tackle box in forever, and wondered if it would even work. Well...somebody decided to like it!

This is a bluegill, right? Not much bigger than my hand, MAYBE 6 inches from lip to tail. Right as I was going to get the hook out of it's mouth, it gave one last flop and released itself. I still had to pick it up as it was too far from the water to flip back in on it's own.
I consider this a skunk as it's not big enough to matter for eating OR bragging. So... skunked, more or less.

Just as I was tying on one of TubeDude's jigs that he gave me, I heard thunder. Pout! I didn't mind the rain (which was sprinkling at first, but by the time I got to my car, it was POURING), but I definitely don't like my fishing rod turned into a lightning rod!

That rain got us pretty good down in salt lake too. Your fish looks like a green sunfish I could be wrong though! Neat looking thing!

I'd second your assessment. It's long, it's lean, it's got that tell-tale blueish streak below the eye. I used to have a much harder time telling, but think that's because I really wasn't seeing green sunfish.
But side by side, they are pretty distinct.

Sure wouldn't mind finding some BIG sunfish, I've only come across 6 and unders mostly. Plentiful where I've found them, and I figger there MUST be some biggerer ones somewhere.

Glad you got out V-D, fun to be fishing again I'm sure. Used to catch frogs easy, until I WANTED to, then - never could. Drives my nuts hearing their spring mating chants, then walk up - silence! And nobody is hopping away. Haven't really tried that hard, my son is usually the frog-napper. Lots of garter snakes, that's for sure.

Well ya beat me on that pond. I tried it Tuesday in my toon, wrong time of day, but I didn't get a nibble. Headed to Willard after and broke my day skunk with a wiper but I like the looks of Andy Adams as a fishing spot and I was graphing fish too so I think it has potential, but since its not close to my home, I most likely won't try it again. Thanks for the report. J

Adams pond is MUCH better than Holmes creek - as far as access goes. There is hardly any slant on the trails from the parking lot. I don't even know if Holmes really has a parking lot, as I always parked by that big double-pole power line across from the golf course. It's more a wide road shoulder than anything.

I was reading fishing articles last night (well, trying to find a good place on Weber river), and one said that Holmes closed down in 2010. However, it was listed in the 2012 Community Fishing book...?? Its also on the DWR fishing report page, though I'm not sure how recently that was updated.

I can definitely say I'm going to Adams at least once a week! It's a 5 minute drive, good walking access (for me, anyway), and I actually got something from it without even trying!

Oh, and it's clean of trash. I only found 2 small bits of lines tangled up in branches. Maybe if we take really good care of it, they'll keep it open after 2016?

Looks like a green sunfish to me as well. Hey it may be small but it beats not catching anything at all.[cool]
