Ice fishing the community fisheries?
#1
Anyone ever hit the hard deck at the community fisheries around Utah County? I'm talking specifically about Highland Glen Park behind LPHS in Highland, and Manila Park Pond just east of the Mount Timpanogos temple.

I know Manila Park Pond has stocker rainbows in it and bluegill because I've caught both there on the soft water. I know there aren't trophies in there, but I'm fishing to eat so size isn't as important. Hoping specifically for panfish although I wouldn't say no to trout. Being a guy without electronics, the small size of that pond appeals to me because there's pretty limited room for the fish to be hiding... I'm guessing if I bounce a Kastmaster around above my jig on one end of the pond, fish on the other end will know about it... Big Grin

You must be taking your New Year's resolution seriously. Two bluegill (the daily limit on community ponds) hardly make a decent sandwich.

Heh... that's a good point. I guess it hadn't occurred to me that the 2 fish limit also applied to panfish that limit out at like 50 in other water bodies...

We just fished highland glen today for a few hours. The pond is iced over and we were fishing on about four inches. We didn't go out too far from the shore because it looks like thin ice if you go out too much farther. About a month ago we couldn't keep them off our hooks just floating worms, but today we didn't catch a thing and we only saw a couple on the sonar. Kids had fun playing on the ice. I'd be real carful going out too far on it. We were fishing in 8 feet of water.

In my experience most of the bluegill in community ponds don't have a lot of size to them. Plus the two fish limit isn't too appealing if you are meat fishing. Utah Lake can have great bluegill fishing through the ice. The past few years the gills have shown up later in the ice fishing season in some of the harbors. Before the pumphouse was dredged out you could load your wagon with a limit of bluegills there.

Last year the minila park sign said it was closed starting in dec.
I would not go on the ice anyway, the pipes in the pond melt the ice from the bottom, if you have a couple inches of snow you wont be able to see the thin spots.

I've tried ice fishing on Highland Glen pond a few times after leaving Tibble fork but never caught anything there thru the ice. For Manila it's closed till the first day of March.
