Interesting Fish and Game response
#1
So, I wrote the Fish and Game to answer the question that came up on this site regarding Chinook salmon limits at Anderson Ranch (the regs do not answer this question). Well, apparently they were just kidding us when they reported that they planted 35,000 Chinook in 2013!! And I am supposing that since they don't exist there is no limit!! Here is their response:

There are kokanee in Anderson Ranch Reservoir, but, no Chinook.

Thank you for contacting Idaho Department of Fish & Game

HI. I am a moderator on the fishing site BigFishTackle Idaho, and the question came up regarding the limit on chinook in Anderson Ranch. Doesn't seem to be listed in the regs. Also, folks are wondering what the approximate size might be this spring/summer. Thanks for any info and I will certainly pass it on. Always a supporter of the F and G!!! Mike

hat link does not work for me either. I would love to see or hear what they said. They still show 35,000 of those getting planted.

I don't even now what to say to that. I guess a phone call is in order. Maybe I'll try calling when I get back from Arrrowrock today. Koks r on the bite!

Yes they are in there, and they count toward your general trout limit, just as coho do in Cascade.

While I agree with your conclusion as it is the most probable intent, the regs don't make it clear at all, so I must ask how you came to know that. The regulations don't specify. And if they don't specify then as written in the regs for MV region, it is most logical to assume that they fall into "other fish species" and would be: All Other Fish Species includes bullfrogs and crayfish
• No bag, size or possession limit

See page 26 of the regs.

The thing I'm wondering is whether you'd want to eat these fish. Wouldn't a 20lb chinook that spends its life gorging on kokanee in a reservoir be absolutely loaded up with methyl mercury?

That is just a guess but I'm guessing that is what they go with. If they actually become a targeted species we will see something like the CDA limit.

Same as a bass over 3 lbs, is much mercury your stiffer won't peck up.

I think the safest bet for all of us fishermen would be for me to test it out for a couple of years. Maybe 2 to 4 at the most... then I'll let you know how it went.

I mis-read the regs. In the Southwest Idaho section, it states that land-locked salmon count toward your trout limit. I expect that is what we will see for Andersen Ranch when the next set of regs come out...

I guess this is one of the problems we face with the 3 year regulation re-write cycle

Actually, there is no limit. See my latest post. Mike

I think you mis understand my whole post. Andersen falls in the Magic Valley section, not Southwest. In Southwest, landlocked salmon (coho and Chinook) fall in to the trout limit. Next years there will be a limit on Andersen Ranch. There were no land locked chinook or coho in the Magic Valley region when the regs were written, and we need to wait 3 years between re-writes now...hence the oversight by F&G.

Soon to be changed. They will count Chinook with your trout limit in Anderson so 6 total.
