Bear Lake Weekend
#1
Fished Bear Lake yesterday all day and then for a couple of hours this afternoon. Didn't enjoy the crappy roads through Logan Canyon, but the fishing was awesome. We caught a bunch of fish yesterday. We fished north of the rest stop and started catching fish at about 8:30 AM and then it was pretty consistent until about noon. It slowed down for a couple of hours and then picked up again before I left. But the weather got gnarly so I took off before dark. Best fish of the day was caught on a dinky pole with 8 pound test. We would have missed it except that the pole was bouncing around on the ice.

Today I took my daughter. We got a late start because of the snow, but got there in time to catch a couple. She reeled in a super nice lake trout. I'm guessing that's a fish she's not going to forget.

Today there was tons of slush where we were at, and all of the newer ice on the lake looked pretty slushy after the snow last night. But, a little cold weather should freeze all of that back up and just make the ice thicker. Do be very careful though when you go out because even though the whole lake is frozen, some of that ice hasn't been there for very long and isn't very thick.

How thick was the ice where you were fishing?

We were on 6-7 inches of ice with some snow and slush on top of that. There were areas without water and slush, but we got there late and there were groups set up in most of the non-slushy areas. I doubt the slush will be much of a problem after this week with temps in the single digits every night.

Sounds like the guys that were at the next pull out further north were on the newer ice and only had 3 inches. I parked at the second pullout north of the rest stop at the southwest end. The ice from there south has been there for 3 weeks. Some of the ice that is further north is only about a week old.

60 - 65 feet seemed to be where they were at this weekend. I'm hoping it stays cold over there and thickens up the ice so we can start hitting some of the other areas of the lake. Lot's of people fishing now on the southwest end. But, it's a big lake and there's lots of fish. Hope the fishing stays good!
