Newton remains a mystery
#1
I had the chance to drive up to Newton yesterday afternoon, and wanted to see if there was anything going on under the ice.
When I got there, the only tracks on the lake were from snowmobiles, and I didn't see any clear signs of holes having been drilled. On the west side of the dam, it looked like a truck might have tried to get through the snow, but I was not going to attempt that passage.
Instead, I drove to the parking area on the east side. There were tire tracks all through the parking lot there, and looked firm enough to try. As I entered the lot, it got softer as I moved toward the lake.
I got turned around but lost momentum and got stuck.
A very kind gentleman was parked just down the road going about his own business, and was kind enough to help me out. With a shovel, some kitty litter and a push, we were able to get my car back to the road. I am very grateful to that man.
I didn't see any sign of fish-related activity, and so decided I was not going to push my luck further.

I have no idea if the fishing is any good. It looked like either nobody knows or nobody cares. I only thought to try because I thought I saw someone post a report of crappie late in 2015.

Oh man we killed them there yesterday!!! Just kidding I went earlier this year and didn't fish it either. I don't know but I don't have a lot of faith in Newton lately. Guess I should try it and find out. Better luck next time and glad you got some help. Later J

no fish!! i don't think the fish even have a chance in there when the water gets so low you can walk accost it.. a few years ago the crappie were thick ,but only the size of palm. If the water level would of stayed up i think we could of had a real nice little crappie spot .

As far as fishing it.. I wouldn't waste my time

Your comments mirror my thoughts lately... Ever since that water got so low and stagnant a year ago it's hard to think many fish survived that terrible low water level and I don't think it ever got close to filling last summer did it? So I doubt there was any decent spawning grounds if anything was still alive... So I expect Newton will have a slow recovery, but I'd be glad to see someone prove me wrong.... Oh well, we got ice on big blue this year so I don't really need that other option since gas prices are down and all... But I do hope it starts to reestablish for when the levels return.... Who knows maybe this year, it's been a good valley snow year and Clarkston seems to have a lot of white stuff so maybe it will fill this summer... I hope... Later J

Definitely a lot of white stuff in Clarkston [:/] It's good for the lakes, but wow am I tired of driving in it. I'm ready for spring.

I don't blame you a bit it's a snowy one this year. Starting to look like star valley. I think we got another inch or two tonight. Guess the canyon will be slick in the morning. Later J

Yeah it was drifting like usual on the way back home tonight. Glad I finally got a vehicle with AWD this year. We've had some pretty crazy storms out this way and I would have really struggled without it. I have a feeling my basement is going to flood this spring. I think there's a good 2-3' in my yard right now. Hopefully Weston will finally fill up this spring with all this west side snow.

I have fished it several times. Each time I have caught a decent number of crappie (decent size) and bluegill... Have not been on it for a month though.

Good to know there are some left to carry on. Maybe in a few years it will get good again. Thanks for letting us know. J

We went last week. We drilled seven holes around the lake and didn't mark one fish in an hour and a half.
