Bear Lake Weekend
#1
Myself, son, and brother (Fat Biker) made it out on Friday, then son and I went back on Saturday. We had pretty good success both days with Friday being better. Between the three of us we caught around 20 macs and cutts on Friday, with the largest at 9 1/2 lbs. Saturday returned with my son. We caught 10 before being blown off at about 1:00. Both days we caught limits of white fish as well. The got to lure for us was a copper 2 3/4 inch Sweedish Pimple tipped with cisco. My son lost his on a good fish and my brother caught that fish a couple hours later with the pimple still attached.
All in all a pretty good weekend...

Tom and Casey kicked my backside Friday morning. Took me to noon to catch my first fish. Went back Sunday and picked up three cutthroats and a bunch of whities.

Tom you seem to really have them figured out this year, you catch fish like the local boys. Congrats on another great showing. J

Good job!
I was the guy to the south of you Friday with my son and brother and two groups to the south of you on Saturday. I had great luck, with limits of whitefish and plenty of trout too.
Went back today and oh my, the lake has changed! About a 1/2" of water on top of the ice and all the snow on the lake is gone!
The ice was still about 8-9" thick and we did great in the morning until about 10:30 and then it turned off for the most part.
I'm glad I got the ice fishing in when I did this year because the warm winds and weather will probably bring it all to an end by the end of the week.
Biggest problem with the whitefish was there were so many that I sent more back due to being foul hooked than I caught by mouth.....fun problem to have!

Mike

P.S.
Just a quick pick of the three trout we kept, didn't get a pic of the whitefish.

So Mike, I'd like to try Friday, can you let me know if the ice is still okay to try it again then? Somehow I didn't get my fill of the ice fishing over there yet... Too many other things scatting my free time lately so I'm really wanting to get at least one more trip in before it breaks up for the year... Thanks and glad you keep finding them... Gives me hope... Later J

I'm also going back up Friday. Any reports on ice conditions would be most appreciated.

Hey Jeff, I'll let ya know if it will be too sketchy. Right now it is still good, but there is a layer of water forming on top as I type this. It refroze last night, but not sure how much.
The ice is still 6-9 inches depending on where you go.

I'll check on it Thursday evening and PM you on the conditions.

The State Park Rangers put the de-icing bubblers out on Monday and there is definitely open water now at the entrance to the marina. The ice is thinning a bit around the mouth and out into the lake for about 20 yards or so. Off to the north or south it is still ok, but a few spots getting onto the lake there are thin enough to worry about.

You should be ok though if you come in from the north or south sides of the dikes.

Thanks Mike, sounds great.... Are you going to go out anymore? When you PM if you don't mind, give me a heads up to which spots are fishing best lately... Sure hope I get one more ice trip in, that's fun to try to pull a nice fish through an ice hole... Just glad I went to the 10" auger, my old 6" would have had me really nervous with the size of some of those fish... Sounds like the whitefish are still active so that's a good thing, they are so good smoked... Anyway thanks so much for the help... Oh and Kevin has been getting after me to get the catfish contest going, so I'll try and have something out on that before too long... Hope you get a chance to retake your title this year and give BLK a run for King.. Later J

I'll pm you some spots. I wish I could get out Friday, but I have a meeting in salt lake so it will be Saturday for me if the ice holds out.

I would like to try the catfish contest again this year. Last year was a bit busy to give it my best effort, but who knows, I may be able to put a bunch of time in this year.

Thank you Mike, appreciate it.... Hoping the catfish will be back to a better size this year without the winter drain affects.... I got that new motor controller so I can troll for cats a little easier this year, so looking to try that a little more this year since it seemed to work okay for BLK last year... Years past I felt like I didn't catch as big of fish trolling, but maybe I wasn't trying it on the right days when the bigger fish were in my area... Anyway appreciate the help... Later Jeff
