Despite my slight misgivings about going to Spring Lake (for no reason but a "gut" feeling) I took my boys there Saturday morning. Got there at a little before 6 am and for 2.5 hrs did not get a single bite, tug, or even stolen worm. I tried everything I knew with no luck. The people there I talked to also had nothing but assured me that it's not ever like that which is about right for my luck.
We then headed to Maple Lake on a friend of mines advice since it was relatively close and in about 2 hours managed to catch one goldfish. My boys insisted we keep it as a pet and since I'm weak and it was all we had I foolishly agreed.
I then, determined not to fail, decided to cheat and went to Spring Lake Trout Farm. Even though it was almost noon at that time we managed to catch several small trout and saved an otherwise disappointing day. The people at the trout farm were great and even though you have to keep and pay for all the fish you catch it was well worth it because my boys had a great time and can't wait to go again. The trout were also delicious and I'm very glad to have paid for the experience.
In the end the boys learned to fish, had a great time, and I think fully caught the fishing bug. This week we'll be trying other places and will hopefully have some better luck elsewhere. Also, we went back Sunday afternoon to release the goldfish back into Maple Lake (after catching about a dozen more), my wife is not as much of a pushover as me
