A model that doesn't zoom the bottom is more than adequate for most ice fishing; however, in deep water (60 + feet), and especially if you target fish that hug the bottom, I believe a zoom is extremely useful. If you plan on fishing for macks, and are going to purchase a flasher-type fishfinder, spend the extra bucks and get one with a zoom feature. Vexilar and other flasher-type units has a big following (especially for ice fishing); however, there is also a big following for the display-type fishfinders for ice fishing. I could be happy fishing with a high-quality unit of either type, but am partial to my Raytheon L470 display-type fishfinder -- which I use on my boat, and after today will be using ice fishing.
