Might want to give it a shot. The boats we chartered back east on L. Ontario used the planer boards to not only get the lures out away from the path of the boat, but also to get the lures closer to shoreline (and shallower water).
FWIW - I was fishing on Sunday, and did quite well fishing pretty tight to the bank, midday, in about 6ft of water.
