i actuall hooked one as a lil' nipper . if you saw the pic i posted a while back on the pike fishing trip in canada , well that was the same year .
the stergon was hooked on our way back from canada , stopped off at this primitive lake , not a house on it . black lake .
anyways dad got tired of my figiting while fishing and stuck a whole bunch of dead minnows on my hook and cast it out of the canoe . he said i'de catch a big ol' catfish on it .
a couple twitches on the rod tip and i set the hook , well it pulled back harder than the hook set , started to double over .
"dad" i yelled , i got a fish !
he looked over at the bent over rod and said , "your snagged on the bottom !"
well the canoe just started taking off , me with a death grip on the rod and dad wondering what the heck was going on .
dad got the rod from me and played that fish like a pro . when the stergon did finally surface it was almost as long as the canoe (as seen thru a kids eyes ) .
well i don't know how long the battle took or exactly how big that stergon was (some 35+ years ago ). but dad and i remember that was the day i finally hooked a big fish and quit swimming in the lakes for years to come . oh yea , never landed the big guy , he snapped the 12 lb. test on my zebco 202 .
i drove by black lake a while back , house after house on it .
black lakes stergon take is now limited to 4 to 5 fish per year for the entire lake .
a couple years ago the stergon fishing season on black lake was over in 12 minutes , how's that for the quickest fishing season ever ?
