A couple years ago I didn't take my reel for my 5 wt rod. I was stuck fishing the EF of Sevier with a 1 wt rod and reel. It was more than enough for the 20 inch brown trout and 20 inch sucker in February. He wouldn't have landed that in if the water was 50 or 60 degrees. I have landed a King Salmon larger than that (40 lbs) on 8 lb test (was sockeye fishing) on the Kenai in the summer. Longest fight I ever had with a fish-probable 20 minutes.
