Tell your buddy to get a quick release bracket and a disconnect plug for his Ulterra.
I also use an Ulterra, and LOVE it, but in case of accident like you had the bracket and plug will save your day.
I HIGHLY recommend the Battery Tender electrical plug, I have installed a lot of motors and have never found a plug better than the Battery Tender plug.

The 12/24/36 volt disconnect from Battery Tender is a rectangular locking block, appearing almost aircraft quality, that has a locking post between the two power posts.
