Southeast Region fishing reports
#1

Adobe Creek Res. (Blue Lake) - Water level is low, the boat ramp is at the end of its reach and most of the lake is only three feet deep. But there are still some deeper holes harboring a fair population of crappie and catfish. Crappie should start biting as the water temperature nears 60 degrees.

Arkansas River (Buena Vista to Salida) - The river above Brown's Canyon is fishing well with Blue Wing Olives emerging strongly on cloudy days. The canyon itself is turning on and fishing is excellent below, from Stone Bridge down to Salida, with baetis hatching on cloudy days and excellent nymphing on brighter days. Size 18 Parachute Adams and Brooks Sprout Baetis are best on top. Subsurface: #18 Tungsten Biot Midges (black and olive), Beadhead Flashback Pheasant Tails and Beadhead Micromayflies. Flows are around 290 cfs with water temperatures in the mid 40s. No sign of mud or runoff thus far and none expected until mid-May.

Arkansas River (Leadville to Buena Vista) - The river above Buena Vista is slowly turning on with baetis activity and midges. Try Tungsten Biot Midges in black, olive, and red; Brassies and Red Zebra Midges on this section. On cloudy days, watch for Blue Wing Olives. Use a Parachute Adams, Brooks Sprout Baetis or Gulper Special on top; Micromayflies, Olive Flashback Pheasant Tails and WD-40s underneath.

Arkansas River (Salida to Canon City) - The Arkansas River from Salida to Canon City is in a very dynamic state. The upper end is seeing good baetis hatches and excellent nymphing. Below Cotopaxi, there are sporadic caddis hatches, tied to spots where the water and riverbed warm quickest. Fish seem to be more keyed into pupae than hatching adults. Evening fishing while the females lay eggs has been productive too. The current weather forecast suggests that the hatch will slow down in its progress upstream.

Beckwith Reservoir - Beckwith has been stocked with trout and fishing for them is fair to good.
[#0000ff]Interactive Map[/#0000ff]

Bonny Reservoir - Current water temperature is 53 degrees and fishing has been slow. Shore casters have caught some white bass and big crappie off the face of the dam near East Beach. Fishing should pick up as the weather warms and water temperature approaches 60 degrees. Lake level is about 15 feet below normal and rising slowly but will go down again in June unless there is significant rainfall. Four-wheel-drive vehicles are recommended for launching and large boats will have difficulty, as ramp depth is about 24 inches. Consult the State Parks Web site for current conditions and closures.

Brush Hollow Reservoir - Water level is down about 10 feet but fishing should be fair to good for most species as shad had an excellent spawn last year, providing good forage for game fish. The lake has large populations of walleye and largemouth bass and a fair number of crappie, with many being caught on flies tossed by float tubers last year.

DeWeese Reservoir - Fishing is fair to good for trout with most methods.
[#0000ff]Interactive Map[/#0000ff]

Elevenmile Reservoir - Fishing for all species is good. Large trout are being caught at scattered locations around the lake and boaters are most successful on the west end. For trout, try salmon eggs, worms or various colors of Power Bait; pink or green seem to be the most consistent fish-getters. Split-jointed Rapalas in gold, black or peach also work well. Pike fishing is fair but slow for kokanee salmon. The water level is approximately seven feet below spillway and buoys have not yet been placed to mark shallow spots and underwater hazards. Boaters should use extreme caution.

Jefferson Lake - Ice-out is not until May but this high-country (10,687 feet) lake near Kenosha Pass is heavily stocked and fishing for rainbows remains good all summer.
[#0000ff]Interactive Map[/#0000ff]

John Martin Reservoir - This used to be Colorado's biggest reservoir but "Big John" is down to a fifth of its original 15,000 surface acres of water and not likely to refill this year. Nevertheless, it had excellent crappie fishing last year and should do so again once the water temperature tops 55 degrees. Only a few crappie were caught off the dam before last week's cold snap halted the bite. However, fishermen have been catching many walleyes and saugeyes in the stilling basin beneath the dam. Some of the saugeyes weigh 4 pounds or more. A few wipers and catfish have also been caught. The Road 19 boat ramp is out of the water but the east boat ramp is still usable.

Lake Meredith - Once heavily stocked with saugeye and wiper, Meredith went dry last year and lost all its fish. Although the lake has since refilled, it will likely be emptied again this summer and will not be restocked until conditions improve.

Martin Lake - The lake is full, ramp usable and docks in. Spring fishing is off to a good start with daily reports of trout and northern pike being caught. Most of the trout are in the 12-inch range, stocked twice in March. They're biting on lures, salmon eggs, power bait and flies. Water temperature remains in the mid-40s.

Nee Gronda Reservoir - A few wipers have been caught on Rat-L-Traps and live minnows fished under a bobber. The lake also has excellent populations of bass, saugeyes and crappie, which should become more active as the water warms. Nee Gronda has more water than any other southeast impoundment but the level is still low and the cement public boat ramp on the east shore is unusable. The old gravel ramp adjacent to it will work for shallow-drafting boats and the privately owned ramp at Cottonwood Camp Ground on the north shore can be used for a fee.

Nee Noshe Reservoir - This lake has a large population of wipers, white bass, saugeyes, crappie and catfish, which will become more active as the water temperature tops 55 degrees. Warm weather after the recent cold snap should help. Water level is low but the gravel boat ramp still reaches well into the lake, though larger boats may have difficulty launching.

Pueblo Reservoir - Fishing for wipers is getting better with many 4 to 7-pound fish being caught in the mid-shoals. Bass Assassins and other jerk baits fished just beneath the surface are most effective, though some have been taken on jigs and other shad imitations. Trout fishing also is good around the north shore marina and Sailboard Flats. Use Panther Martin and Mepps spinners with gold, silver or black blades. Walleye fishing remains slow.

Queens Reservoirs - The lake is very shallow but still harbors bass, wipers, saugeyes and crappie. The water should warm up quickly since it is so shallow, resulting in good spring fishing. The boat ramp is unusable but small hand-launched boats can still get on the lake. Lower Queens is totally dry.

South Platte River (btwn Spinney and Elevenmile) - Fishing continues to fluctuate from fair to good. Cutthroats and spawning rainbows have been hitting on Sparkle Wing RS-2s, Scuds, peach and apricot egg patterns and black Woolly Buggers. Hatches include midges and Blue Wing Olives.
[#0000ff]Interactive Map[/#0000ff]

Spinney Mountain Reservoir - Shore casters are having success south of the dam along the Homestake Canal entrance and around the north boat ramp. Although some fall stocker trout are being caught, most are older and bigger, in the 18 to 22-inch range. San Juan Worms and black Marabou Jigs bounced off the bottom work best in the early morning hours, with action slowing down around noon and picking up again in late afternoon. The river above Spinney is also fishing well. Peach and pink egg patterns, #18-20 BWOs and #22 RS-2s work best for fly casters; small silver Rapalas for those who prefer hardware. Due to low water levels, only hand carried boats are permitted at this time.

Trinidad Reservoir - Trout fishing is fair from boat or shore using a variety of baits, but fly fishing has slowed at the inlet due to cloudy water from runoff. A few bass, walleye and perch are starting be taken, but fishing for warm-water species remains slow. One large tiger muskie was taken recently. Lake now has 700 surface acres of water and is rising slowly. Current temperature 52 degrees.

Turks Pond - The pond has been stocked and trout fishing is very good with bait or lures. Bluegill, crappie, and bass are also biting well and an 8-1/2-pound saugeye was caught recently -- short of a state record but big enough for a Master Angler award.

Turqoise Lake - Lake is still frozen, but the ice is unsafe. The only open water is in small coves on the south side and the inlet area, but fishing is slow until full ice-off.

Twin Lakes - Ice is off and lake trout will be feeding aggressively. From boat or shore, anglers score best on big macks using sucker meat or rainbow-colored Rapalas. Shore fishing is still good for rainbows near the power plant using Montera's Marvels tipped with mealworms.

Twin Lakes Forebay - Fishing is getting more consistent as the water temperature warms. Flyfishers have been scoring well with Blue Wing Olives and small midges. Montera's Marvels also work, but try multiple patterns to find what the fish are biting on.

Two Buttes Reservoir - Two Buttes dried up last year and lost all its fish, which either died or were rescued by DOW personnel and transferred to other lakes. This reservoir relies on precipitation to refill and will not be restocked until conditions allow.

Wahatoya Reservoir - Fishing is only fair at best since stocking has not yet started.
