You are right, HarHar. I was born in Texas. Waco to be exact. The Navy didn't have any ships available so they sent me to Long Beach, Cal for a little sightseeing (join the Navy and see the world, through a porthole). But even that didn't keep me from fishing.
While killing time between refuelings, I hung a rotten piece of meat on a treble hook, used 1000 lb shotline and let it trail in the wake of the ship. Being in a warmer, southern climate, I naturally dozed off. When I woke, the shotline was pacing the ship on the starboard side. The Captain, being an avid fisherman himself, ordered the ship stopped while I hauled in the line a foot at a time. After about thirty minutes, I could see the 12 ft hammerhead shark on the end of the line.I was thinking shark steaks as other shipmates helped me haul it up the side. Just as I was about to use a gaffing hook, the shark gave a big burp (yes, sharks do burp), the hook came out the shark swam merrily away, leaving me with hunger drool running down my cheek. Did I mention that the water was 6,000 ft deep? Luckily I didn't hook a submarine, it would have been bloody heck to skin.
Have a nice day.
