I agree tubeN2. I don't think that they have a long term memory but they know what to avoid once they have had a bad experience.
I do alot of fishing at night for walleyes and over the past couple of years the catch from a boat trolling has definitely come down, but once the boats have left the area the catching from shore using the same lures cranks up! Have they (learned) to avoid boats I don't know, I just know the catch is getting better from shore.
